I have a place for everything in my kitchen, and I know where everything is wthout having to think twice. Have always been like that. Here, we keep extra groceries on shelves in our attached garage. We don't do a lot of stocking up, because our eating habits are not the same as when kids were home.

Amazingly enough....my drawers, cabinets, pantry spaces and pockebook are all very organized. Lord help my desktop! LOLOL!

My surfaces are terribly cluttered all the time because we simply don't have enough space for all our stuff...our home is VERY small... but my kitchen is precisely organized.

I suppose that is because cooking is my passion. If I couldn't relax there...I'd implode!

Now If I could only rid myself of all the public clutter, and have the rest of my home as neat and organized as my kitchen drawers.......I'd be a much less stressed out person.

Yup - my pantry is to deep - at least 6 cans! And the door gets in the way and the shelves are rough. When we finish our basement finishing project, that closet gets an overhaul even if I get so desparate I call a closet organizing company.

OK, I won't go quite that far but those pullout single-can-deep shelves are really appealling as compared to scribbling on the tops of the cans to identified them. BB gets used for black beans and baked beans to often. Better than using the garage which has two problems in Minnesota: I get cold and somethings freeze and burst.

So I will dream of white paint and white formica laminated shelves and some drawers. In the mean time, I'm going to make a kid alphabetize the spices. She owes me a job. And I'll feel better.

Good luck on surface clutter problems. Baskets can help somewhat. But sometimes we have to bend to our families patterns and be adaptive while being creative.

Here's to the never ending struggle!

Oh - does anyone know of the short poem I read while very young about how your life is spent sweeping and cleaning the dirt and then eventually they bury you in it. That may explain why I don't take dirt to seriously.

The poem I'm thinking of is called Dust if You Must--all the things that are more important than dusting/cleaning. The last line goes something like"And when you go, and go you must, you yourself will make more dust." Lol--I love it!!

I haven't organized my drawers yet. We're repainting the kitchen, and as we go I'm organizing. My mom bought me a nice new set of knives for Christmas, so that will be my starting point. I need to replace almost all of my utensils, too. So as I buy new ones, the old ones can go!! I have way too much stuff that I never use--one of my goals for the new year is to completely streamline the household--starting with the kitchen!

http://www.wrensworld.com/dust.htm Here's an absolutely beautiful copy of that poem that you can send. Still not quite the one I remember but the sentiment is there.

I've lost a kitchen knife and the small fry pan disappeared yesterday. I think I have a 4 year old kitchen mouse stealing things for his toy kitchen.

One thing I read about clearing clutter: when you get a new thing - you must throw the old away. Don't save it for "someday".

I use the "one in, one out" idae a lot. One of the best frugal tips I have ever applied is this one--it teaches you to shop to "replace", not to "add to". The exception? My two "kitchen mice" got the old set of pans( very cheap--used until we could afford better)!! They'll most likely get the utensils, too.

Have you guys ever read the poem Thank You, Lord--about housework? I'm trying to find a nice copy to print and frame and hang in my kitchen. It's all about thanking God for the blessings of life, as evidenced by all the house work(ie, unmade beds that are comfy, a dirty fridge that is full of food, etc.) Every time I get aggravated about having to clean the house(AGAIN!!) I read this poem--it really puts things into perspective!

You can't organize a junk drawer! That defeats its purpose.

Go thru and toss the unrecognizable and real junk but don't pretend that you can organize it.

I confess I still have two sip-it cups. I will just have to let go.

Post that poem.
