Here I think a shop would have a counter, where the till (cash register) is. Most people would call the surfaces in kitchen, bathroom and laundry a bench. Men also have a work bench out in the shed (or workshop.)
However, I have discovered, it doesn't matter what I call it, there is always too much junk on it!!
