Has anyone here heard of or tried a fruit called "Dinosaur Eggs"? I bought a couple at the store to try them as I had never seen them before. They are shaped like plums but have a peachy colored skin with plum type spotting.

Turns out they are a cross breed fruit, a cross between plums (I knew it!) and apricots. They are quite tasty! I guess they named them Dinosaur Eggs to appeal to young kids Their real name is "Pluot". Try them, they are yummy.

Here's a fruit cream cheese dip that just came through a recipe list I am on. I haven't tried it yet but thought it looked yummy:

Cream Cheese Dip For Fresh Fruits

4 oz cream cheese
2 tablespoons cream
3 teaspoons honey
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
1/16 teaspoon nutmeg
1/16 teaspoon cinnamon
3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons diced toasted almonds

Blend together all ingredients except almonds. Chill. When ready to serve place dip in small bowl. Top with almonds. Place bowl on plate and surround with assorted fruits such as banana slices, melon cubes, grapes, strawberries and peach or nectarine slices.

Serves 2

I make my own trail mix that I bag up so it's ready to grab and go. Ingredients vary every time. I always try to put in a tiny bit of candy - seems to make the whole bag disappear every time. Ingredients - small cracker (ex goldfish), almonds, raisins, cranberries, cereal (ex corn bran - sweet with lots of fibre), sunflower seeds, choc chips, mini marshmallows, candy ... whatever your kids like -- always has nuts in it though for protein.

cup meals:
Spread bread dough or biscuit dough on the bottom and up the sides of a greased muffin tin. Then fill with whatever you like: pepperoni and cheese, ham and broccoli, etc. This is a great way to use up bits and pieces. Bake at 350 for about 15 min. Cool and freeze. Grab one and put in a sandwich bag. It will be thawed by lunch time.

Frozen Fruit Cups
3 bananas
3 containers (8 ounces each) fat-free strawberry yogurt
1 package (10 ounces) frozen strawberries, thawed and undrained
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, undrained
Directions:
1. Remember to wash your hands.
2. Line 18 muffin-tin cups with paper baking cups.
3. Dice or mash bananas and place in a large mixing bowl.
4. Stir in remaining ingredients.
5. Spoon into muffin-tin cups and freeze at least 3 hours or until firm. Remove frozen cups and store in a plastic bag in freezer.
6. Before serving, remove paper cups and let stand 10 minutes.
Helpful Hints:
Turn these Frozen Fruit Cups into Popsicle-like treats by pouring the mixture into 7-ounce cups and putting them in the freezer. When partially frozen, put a plastic spoon or Popsicle stick in the center of the cup and freeze until firm.
provided by the Family Nutrition Program at Kansas State University Research and Extension, makes 18 servings

celery sticks with sprayable cheese

deli tray where there are seveal kinds of meats and cheese with fruit

yogart

boiled eggs

vegitable crackers

This is the perfect time to try and get them to eat new food. Usually, after school, they are starving!

Crudites: fresh vegetables served with a salad dressing (we use a vinaigrette, but ranch dressing is very popular)

Cut up fruit with a yogurt dip - add some orange juice to the yogurt to make it orangey

Cheese and crackers - try different cheeses and different crackers

edamame - steamed soy beans with sea salt

hummus with homemade pita chips

homemade chips with salsa

mini-bowls filled with dried fruit, nuts and olives

Use a cupcake pan and line with pastry and make mini-quiches (eggs, cheese, vegetables)

For the kids wanting a liquid diet: smoothies

INstead of nuts, try different seeds...

And instead of yogurt, try a cream cheese / canned pumpkin mixture (with some sugar and cinnamon) as a dip for apples etc.

Carmel Apple Dip

8 oz cream cheese
1/3 cup brown sugar
milk
1 tea vanilla

Place the cream cheese into the food processer. Process with milk, a little at a time until creamy. Add brown sugar and vanilla.
Great on any fruit.

Also cut a banna lengthwise with the skin on, put choc chips and mini marshmellos in the banna and nuke.

I am wondering if one can find hummus without sesame paste? I will have to look for it.

My children love soybeans, broccoli, and carrots.

It's real simple for the soybeans since I just boil them and they are ready. Sometimes a little sprinkle of garlic salt adds to the flavor, but my kids love the beans plain.

The same for the broccoli, just boil and add some butter and sprinkle a bit of garlic salt (optional).

The mini carrots they like to eat with ranch dressing. And my dd loves making her own carrot juice.

Finally, frozen grapes. Dd says she loves it when we freeze the grapes and she gets to pop them in her mouth for some crunchiness from the ice. LOL!

Oh and I almost forgot! If no one has mentioned this, a lot of folks in Hawaii love Li Hing Mui powder and use it in almost everything. Recently we tried it with orange slices. You sprinkle the Li Hing Mui powder over the orange slices and voila! you've got a nice treat! I do know that the powder has aspartame so if you avoid that, than this powder is not for you.

One oldie I love is the peanut butter and banana slices sandwich! Spread peanut butter on one or both slices of bread, whichever you prefer. Slice the bananas lengthwise in two and put them on the piece that has peanut butter, close your sandwich and you've got yourself a yummy treat! You can also slice round slices with the banana and use them to put on top instead of lengthwise. I find that toasted bread makes the peanut butter melt, and the crunchiness is wonderful with the banana slices to soften the whole experience. You can also drizzle some honey over the banana that is over the peanut butter that is over the bread, just before you put the other slice on top! LOL! Or just toasted bread with peanut butter and honey!

Okay, hope that helped. We keep it pretty simple. If I think of others I will post.
