I'd like to know the answer to that also. I know people at work that I call my friends, but we don't see each other outside of work or a volunteer activity that is still connected to work. The only time I went any where with a few of the girls from work - we attended family night for one of our co-workers son. It was a sad occasion, but we did go to dinner before hand and remarked how we should go out to dinner or something every so often, hasn't happened yet--but then I haven't had any spare money to go out with the girls either. I'd ask people to my house for craft night, cards or whatever, but we don't have air conditioning and it's not nice for people not used to having just fans. Oh well, would be nice to have a face to face friend that I could really talk to, although I really love having my online friends too.

If I've not heard a from a friend for a while I always sent a phone text to just say hi, see what comes back and either phone and converse or organise a coffee somewhere to ahve a proper catch up.
I make the effort to call and e-mail. I set up lunch or dinner dates and make it a point to reset it up if we have to cancel. I figure we are all busy but people have always been busy so I make myself take the time.
