Unfortunately, some worms & Trojans slip past the Virus scans. This is a site to download the STINGER virus scan. It gets rid of Bugbear and all the nasty little friends that are coming in with it.
This seems to be the one that is finding it's way into many lists & the scan is very safe to use after you download it. I've run it numerous times (I get over a hundred emails a day).
Caron's son came up with this idea quite a while back. It won't keep you from being infected but it may help prevent spreading it in the event (God forbid!) you ever are infected.
Type this into your address book. It will be the very first entry then if a worm infects you and tries to send it will hit this and stop dead in it's tracks. It works--I've never had a worm but have accidentally clicked on it when addressing and it STOPS the e-mail.
!000@wormalert.com
We use Norton and it is worth its weight in gold. We receive between 150 and 300 e-mails a day and lately have received NUMEROUS viruses (in fact just got one the bugbear) a few minutes ago. Norton always stops it dead.
Good luck!
Jayne

Abear,
One way to not get viruses on your computer is to not open ANY attachements! I get info from a Dan Gookin, (he writes books and helps people with computer problems online) and he said this is almost a sure way to keep viruses from attacking your computer. I have informed everyone in my mailing list to not send me any attachements, as I will not open them; and unless they can find a way to send what they want me to see in the body of the letter, they no longer send me stuff.
Most times, people don't even know they have a virus and it gets sent out to the people in their address book anyway. I had been infected about a year ago, and was almost certain where it had come from, and thank goodness, I keep a virus scanner (Norton) enabled on my computer at all times.
I might also add....I do not send attachements, unless it is pictures, to my family and friends; and Norton scans all my email before it goes out.
My server also scans my mail, and hold suspicious email for me to go check out without having to worry about infecting my computer. But, I still don't take any chances...I DO NOT OPEN ATTACHEMENTS, unless it is pictures from one person that I know takes the same precautions as I do.
*God will not take us to it, unless He can lead us through it.*
I will open attachments on ONE condition. I insist that the sender send a warning first WITH subject. I do the same for anyone I'm sending attachments too. This is the ONLY way I open them. Otherwise I delete. Period.
Norton is the best as far as I'm concerned. There are some good free ones available on-line. A couple of my newsletters use it but I'm not sure off hand what the name is though.
Jayne
BTW We did receive a virus once from someone we knew so we alerted them. He never did thank us.

Crickett - Thanks for the link. I will have DH check it out when he has time. Nothing gets downloaded onto this computer without DH's okay first.
Jayne - I have something similar to the !000@wormalert.com as the first address in my address book already. I've had that for over a year. You're right, if I accidentally click on it when I am sending an e-mail, it stops in its tracks! I am considering switching over to Norton when my subscription with McAffee is up in Spetember. My Mom really likes Norton too. Although, to be fair, I have had McAffee stop several worms/viruses that were sent via e-mails.
hapiladi - I only open attachments from selected people. I know those people have antivirus software that they keep up-to-date and, like Jayne, they have to advise me first that the attachment is coming.
Thanks for the tips everyone. Like I said, I am pretty sure that I don't have a worm. But does anyone know how to actually "look" to make sure?
My Mom & are are pretty sure we know who the culprit is. We don't open stuff from that person anyway...and haven't for quite a while.
Hi aBear! Well, my computer crashed Sunday. I was downloading IE and at the end it said reboot your computer. I did and everything was gone. A blank screen. Did the rescue discs, etc. Is that what a virus or worm does? I have Norton and keep it up to date and run it frequently. My sister is having problems with her computer (and she uses hers for work). My other friends that I send all the same stuff to haven't had any problems. So exactly what does a virus do? aBear I sure hope I didn't send you anything bad and I hope you didn't send me anything bad. Amy said I just messed up. I hope she is right.
1) McAfee - kept up-to-date ate least weekly, and I check for new updates at least 3 times a week
2) ZoneAlarm
3) I do NOT use Micro$oft Outlook or Outlook Expre$$ - I use Pegasus Mail which *so far* is impervious to virus and worm attacks.
Even if I "get" a worm or virus, I won't spread it because I don't have an addressbook in Outlook - *so far* Pegasus's addressbook won't respond to viruses and worms!
Thank you for the Pegasus site. I have Norton Anit-Virus which I update almost daily. AOL is able to handle whatever happened to my computer, but my Compuserve Account is really messed up. It says I am online and I can reach my email, but can't bring up the homepage, can't go to any websites, nothing. I've tried reloading the CompuServe discs - 2 of them - I've talked to technical support about 7 times. Now I don't know if I have messed things up myself in going into the "guts of the computer" and deleting things that looked bad. Somehow I ended up with 2 files :EX1LG and STINGER. When I deleted them, things got worse. I am very frustrated and angry that someone would do this. Such a mean thing to do to a stranger. I've had a headache since last Sunday. I should just let go and use my AOL and forget CS, but I seem to be obsessed with getting it right. I feel invaded. In the scheme of the world, I know this is a small problem and I need to get some perspective on it.

Who did this?
Tech Support at CS weren't able to help you through this?
Did you happen to ask CS if you should have deleted those files and if not, how you can get them back?
