How Many Times Taking the Driver TEst?

In our state you get 25 tries but only one per day is allowed.

How many times did it take you or someone you know to pass the driver's practical exam?

For me it was the first time, maybe because it was back in the 80s?

My dd said, no one passes the first time anymore!

What do you think?

What is your experience?

Log on here to support those who struggle with this real life exam...

OMG, I don't even want to think about it! I failed the driving part of the test twice when I was 16 because I couldn't parallel park close enough to the curb - and on the third time, I was 12 1/2 inches from the curb (the max allowed was 12 inches) and the state trooper was nice enough to let me pass because I think he knew that I would've had a melt down and cried right there if not. I still cannot parallel park!

That is one of my biggest fears in life to this day! I almost passed out from being nervous for taking the NC exam when we moved here. They randomly choose people to drive after you pass the written exam and thankfully I wasn't chosen! I'm a good driver...I just can't parallel park and I HATE driving on highways!

I feel for everyone in this situation!

in the current driver test parallel parking is the very first thing you are asked to do, knock over a cone and that's it for the day...now they have cars that parallel park for you, amazing! I want one!

I NEED one! ROFL!! I would still be there on the course today if that was the first test that I had to pass. Thankfully at the time, it was the last thing on the test.

I passed my learners test (1983) 9/10
Now you have to get 27/30 to pass.
For the drivers test I passed 100% (written and practical on a manual shift car) but was given a warning to watch my speed.
Now for a drivers you have to not only pass a written practical but recieve red "P" (provisional) plates for 2yrs and only 4 points and 0 alcohol, but then you have to do another written test to go to green "P" for 1 year then you can go to open licence and over the next 3yrs get a total of 12 points.
Learners costs $17 (you get 3yrs written only)
Red P plate licence is $50 (2yrs)
Green P plate licence is $30 (1yr)
Open licence is now $75 and the licence is renewed and paid every 5 years.
Now for ds2 you need min 100 hours in a log book (10 night hours) on your learners to be even given the chance for your P plate.

I have no problems parking and park rear in most of the time makes it easier to get out of a parking space and I have no problems reverse parallel park in my own car.

I passed 100%
Hubby passed with 1 question wrong.
Michael a couple of years back passed with 1 wrong in written and practical (he's now on his opens and collected if first lot of extra 3 points he now has 7)
Cameron has 26 hours up on his learners and 8 of those night driving.
You can't go for your learners until you're 16 and you can't go for your P plate until you're 17.

At this time of the year over here when school is almost finished for the year those just leaving and going on holidays without parents etc are the nuisances on the road, and I can tell you the police know cause the roads are covered with them lately.

Drivers ed is optional over here, depends on how wealthy the school is, is should be mandatory!

I passed my driver's test on the first try with 100% on the written exam. After the exam instructor marked me wrong on one question on the drinking age, I pointed out to him that I HAD the right answer and the test was wrong. The drinking age had just turned 21, the test said 20 was the right answer but I had checked 21. He was not happy I pointed out the test's mistake but it gave me 100% on the test. The only part of the driving test I had trouble with was parallel parking. I did it too slow. and Tami, I can tell you that was the one and only time I ever did parallel parking. I never did do it right during driver's ed and I have not done it again since my driving test so many years ago. I avoid parallel parking like the plague and will park a mile away if need be just to not have to do it!

My dd passed her driving test on the 3rd try. She passed the written test on the first try but had trouble with the driving part.

My ds1 passed his test on the first try.

Now ds2 has completed driver's ed and is finishing up his required driving hour so he can go get his license. I am delaying that as long as possible because though he is an excellent driver and I know will pass, he just doesn't seem to have the maturity my other dks has at the same age so I worry. Not looking forward to my insurance rates going up either for a single, male under 25 driver!

I just love to parallel park!!! I park long vans and can whip into the tightest spots. Look out for this woman driver!

Ellen... My daughter said no one passes the driving test the first time in PA. CA is a different story... everyone passes but few can actually drive.

My first try, I didnt pass the driving test, cuz of the DARN Parallel parking he said I was inexperienced. My parents than made my brother and I go to driving school, and I did fine through there, and they didnt ask me to parallel park during the test, because the day I went up it was snowing and he wanted to cut it short, so I lucked out. Im like Sammi, I will go to any length to NOT have to parallel park, I cant even do it anyhow. My dd can paralell park fine and my GD can as well(she has a learners permit) in Mass they have to have a certain amount of hours with the learners permit, its alot too cant remember how many. In NH you dont need a learners permit, you just have to have someone over either 18 or 21 with you that has a liscense, I think its 21 not too sure......

I passed on the first try for the written and driving tests. My oldest son passed after the 4th try, my oldest daughter passed after the 4th try, my youngest daughter passed after the 2nd try and my youngest son passed on his first try.

Sandie, In NH you have to have 40 hours of drive time after driver's ed and 10 of those hours have to be night time driving. You also have to drive with someone in the car over 25 who has had their license for over a year. We are finishing up hours for ds2 so he can take his driving test but I am NOT looking forward to my insurance rates going up. Once he passes his test, I will have 3 single, under 25 drivers on my insurance and two of them are guys which makes it worse!
