Home Ec in Junior High

Remember Home Ec class in Junior High? I was wondering if schools still offer that class these days? I remember learning to cook biscuits and cakes, homemade donuts, etc... and sew an apron! The second semester we learned to sew a dress but mine turned out like a potato sack!!! Could be why I don't sew today but love to cook! LOL!!

Do you remember Home Ec?

Here we don't have junior high...just elementary and high school. There is no home ec in elementary and it is not mandatory in high school. In our high school instead they have a cass that is focus is more on cooking and restaurant manager...they have a fully funstional commercial kitchen and restaurant front that they use for the course to learn all about the food trade. We also have a hair dressing class that the kids actually work on maniquins and then kids to cut hair. I am not even sure if there is a seamstress class anymore. Times sure have changed. I took home ec right through.....I madea shirt for my first project.....then a western skirt....thought I was so cool wearing it at the time LOL....I also made my grade 9 grad dress...nothing special but I was so proud of it...LOL I am not a great seamstress but I can sew and still make my kids costumes when they want them. I just got a serger so hoping to learn to sew a bit more in future...I would like to be able to sew my own formal gowns for hubby's events on base.....

No, not in these schools. Instead, they have classes like "camping and survival skills" - which my son hates and cannot wait until it's over. He will never be a camper but he's forced to go through this class. I know that he would much rather take a cooking class. He's just that type of kid.

My sister's son still has sewing in his middle school in Pa. He was so proud of a pillow and a shirt that he made in his class. I wish that I would've paid more attention in those classes and that I would've listened to my mother when she offered to teach me how to sew when I was a teenager.

I will have to ask Melissa next door if they still have Home Ec & Shop for the boys. I loved Home Ec and loved my teacher too. I made an apron and pj's and that poor collar looked like Ihad worn them a dozen years by time I finished with them. They were pink & gray and yes wore them till they got too small for me. Can't stand pj's now only gowns.

At the high school here, they have a classed called Family and Consumer Science. It covers basic sewing, cooking, budgeting, family planning. The family planning, they actually get a baby doll that monitors how the student takes care of it. It crys just like a real baby, you have to feed and change diaper etc, a real eye opener for some kids.

Sandie, That reminds of a story my dh told me. In 7th grade they were to bake a cake as a 'science project' but somehow he ended up using cornmeal instead of flour so had cornbread with frosting on it. He said the teacher and everyone else ate it all but he didn't win anything. Now he doesn't like cornbread very much.

I think we had Home Ec in 9th grade in Junior High when I was a kid but now 9th grade is at the High School. I know it isn't offered as a 7-8th grade class and don't remember it as a 9th grade option when dd1 was picking her classes for 9th a couple weeks ago.

Not here, all the classes are strictly academic. I think it is a shame as they are basic skills that all kids would benefit from
