What is cricket

Just curious would anyone here know what I meant if I said I enjoyed cricket?
If you do know how do you know?

Are you talking about cricket the sport? I'm not sure when I found out what it was but I do know about it--I've never played it. My husband has talked about cricket, too, being from the Syracuse University area.

If you said I enjoy cricket, I would think you meant the game. The game played with bat/ball on a field with wickets. ........You may also mean you enjoy the chriping crickets. If a cricket gets into my house in the fall of the year their chriping drives me nuts. They hide and you can't find them to get them out. Very hard to find if they get into a house.......I've also heard people say on movies, " By Cricket". I have no idea what this saying means......

Yes I mean cricket the sport, both my boys play or played, cricket in Australia is what baseball is to the US and cricket is pretty world wide.
I was curious as dh was on his forum and said something about cricket and so many people, ok men, that are on that forum wanted to know why we Australians would play with a bug.
I thought it hilarious but he didn't, he said what do they, being mostly Americans, think we are so backward we have to play with bugs LOL

If you hear the term 'it's just not cricket' that means it's just not fair.
It was a good knock, means that it was a good batting innings.
Probably a few more out there but none come to mind right now.

Kathy, I think the men on your dh's forum were kidding or just a joke that wasn't to funny.....I think most people especially men know what the game cricket is....I know that my 5 grandsons even know about this game and their young.....OK now I understand the saying by cricket.....thanks for telling me.....

I have to disagree with most people knowing what cricket is...at least around me here in NC. I would be shocked if you polled 100 people, who were born and raised here, if more than 15 of them knew what it was.

The second things is ..... the problem was that your dh was asking men.....they just don't get it. lol!

That really makes us here in the US look bad. Sometimes I feel like people here walk around with blinders on and only deal with what is comfortable with them -- some never try to leave their little "box" to learn something new.

For ex: Do you know how many people around us say that they don't read the newspaper because there's too much violence in it. WHAT??? They fail to realize that this violence is happening around them. I want to scream WAKE UP!

Ok...off my

Well Kathy, I have heard of cricket! Even played it myself a bit over he years. . .but PLEASE don't ask me to watch the Boxing Day test!!! I find it a bit boring to watch, but love the highlights.
Happy, the saying may also be from Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio. I remember reading that in a book when I was younger.

Tami, I do sometimes find that some people from either US or UK tend to think that their own country defines the world! I am surprised by the number of people who express surprise that we have different seasons to them. In Australia I think we grow up realising we are different to many other countries and it is normal for us.
Sorry back to cricket, Bilby you'll often hear that someone has had 'a good innings' meaning they lived a long full life, and also if you let something go 'through to the keeper', you choose not to comment or act on it
