how to change an mp3 song to play on an iPhone?

There are some times when I feel so old and outdated...now is one of those times. I cannot figure out how to change mp3 songs to play on my iPhone. I have some songs loaded into iTunes but how do I get them on my phone with only a few songs, not the whole list of songs?
