Voluntary work

Just wondering if anyone does any sort of voluntary work?

If so what do you do?

How long have you been doing it?

How did you get involved?

I volunteer right here at FamilyCorner! I've been doing this for over 5 years now.

I also volunteer at my younger kids' school. This is the second year in a row that I have helped in the school library. Each Monday morning I am there for about 3 hours, putting away books, checking out books for children, helping them find the books they want, and reading stories to them.

I volunteer here at FC, too!

I'm also the room parent for both of my kids' classrooms.

I'm trying to find a place where my kids and I can volunteer this summer. I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas, though.

I have done a lot of volunteer work over the years. First I was a Parentcare Volunteer through our local hospital. It was a parent mentoring program and you worked with families who had all kinds of needs anything from just being a friend to really needing more support. I did that for about 8 years. I volunteered for a local county visitation center that needed volunteer to supervise parents who had court ordered supervised visits with their children. (that was interesting). I am a founder and former Board member of a rape crisis/domestic violence center and held various positions there (Secretary 8 years, Chairperson 2 years, Direct Service Coordinator 2 years, crisis line volunteer 6 years and on many committees such as Personnel Committee, Governance Committee, Direct Service Committee, and By-laws committee usually serving in several positions and on several committees at once. I volunteered there for 18 years and just recently stepped down from the Board last month. I am on a local School Improvement Council. I was vice president of that schools PTO for a couple years as well. right now I am looking for a new volunteer opportunity as I need a new challenge in my life. I am a home daycare provider and I look at volunteering as a way to spend time with grown ups and actually contribute something to my community. It lets me use my brain and challenge myself.

Our family cleans our church regularly - We, as a church, feel that we shouldn't pay someone to do it, but not alot of folks like to sign up :-) - That's OK, it's something we can do for others & especially for God.....It's also a good way of teaching the kids how to do things for others without expecting pay for it.

I am Leader in 4-H , a mastergardener (volunteer position), help at school events, I try to donate pherisis blood every other month, and I take a shut-in out once in awhile and call her and just "listen". I am not looking for awards I was brought up by the golden rule and try to practice it but fail miserably alot of times.

I have done lots of different volunteer work at our church but as my health has declined I'm not able to do much any more. Two of my granddaughters started volunteering where I worked, at a Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility. I always took them every other Saturday when I was off. After I retired I was so lonely for the people I cared for and my co-workers so I started volunteering too so then we went every Saturday and I got my dog Skippy signed up as a visiting volunteer too. They loved it when they saw all of us coming. Haven't been there much in about 6 weeks. Grandkids always have so many plans and activities and I just haven't been going my self lately but will soon return, have been thinking about going after my music class. We will all be getting back into it again after camping season passes. I mostly do room visitation with those that don't get any or much company, just so they have some company and of course when Skippy goes they love him. My granddaughters do room visitation, deliver mail and help with games and parties.
