Yankee Stadium Closes For Good

Sad to see an end of memories after 85 1/2 years that it was opened. Too bad they are going to tear it down. Ground for a new stadium was broken on April 2006. The new stadium rising at a price of $1.3 billion dollars just accross 161st. Anxious to see how it looks.
How many of you visited the Yankee Stadium to watch a game?

Neither of us here have been there, but dd1's boyfriend went there this summer when the Pope came! Now that was cool.

I was born in the Bronx and lived near the stadium when I got married. My Father and his brothers were great Yankee fans the games were always on.
The new stadim will open in April 2009. Outfield seats will cost $100 and premium seats from $500 -$2500. So far 3,500 of the 4,300 premium seat have been sold. They will make up the difference for the cheaper seats.

First Woman Umpire At The Yankee Stadium

In 1973 My cousin got a chance to play ball in Yankee Stadium. During the Yankee television broadcasts of the games it was announced that the author George Plimpton who wrote for Sports Illustrated Magaxine was forming a team to play with him against Mickey Mantel and a team of MIckey's choice. Mr Plimpton wanted his team to be made up of all the people in America who ever dreamed of playing ball in Yankee Stadium. He asked that all these dreamers write to him in care of Yankee stadium and explain to him why they wanted to be on his team. My Cousin who is a gal wrote if he couldn't use her as catcher she would like to umpire the game. She had played baseball and softball for 15 years and was a semi-professional umpire. She received an invitation to come to Yankee Stadium to try out. There were 27 other hopefuls from all over America. The Yankee public relations people felt it would be more exciting to have a lady umpire instead of a lady pitcher. They were allowed to bring their families and friends and sit right behind home plate to watch. After the game they were allowed to stay and watch the regular game. Afterwards they were invited upstairs to the Yankee office for sandwiches and soda.
We were all so proud of my Cousin who was forty eight at the time. The team was called George Plimpton All Stars versus the Mickey Mantle All stars.

Talked to my Cousin today. She was excited that she was able to go with her nephew to the game at the Old Yankee Stadium before it closed. Her Family surprised her with the tickets and parking.

She sent me a photo of the day she was umpire over thirty years ago at the Yankee Stadium. It was printed in the New York Daily News by a photographer that was assigned to the game. It appeared the next day in the sports section. It was with the catcher Joe Garagiola, arguing over a call.

She is writing a book with all her mimoirs of her life.

Sueanne, that photo is sooooo cool! What a groundbreaker your cousin was!

I also grew up in the Bronx, and went to a few games with my boyfriend... Yankees vs Redsox was a favorite,,,

These days I can't afford to take my family to a game. $400 for the cheap seats??? The ticket prices are OBSCENE! These sports franchises are money hungry business machines that have forgotten that it is a GAME.. and that ordinary people should be able to enjoy it.. I don't think that's the true spirit of baseball... So I'm sorry to say that we will never see the inside of the new Yankee Stadium.
