I wasn't sure where to post this tip, so I hope it is in the right place.
I found this on the WikiHow page that I get on my home page. Don't use the first part of your email address as your user name on newsgroups and chat rooms. (That would include FC.) If you do get SPAM, you can report it to spam@uce.gov. This is the Federal Trade Commission. If they get enough complaints from the same sender, that sender will be charged $500 per email!
If you use BonzaiBuddy or other spyware, they are actually subsidiaries of spammers.
Ordering free stuff from the Web could also get you lots of spam. Get you an alternate email address that you don't use for personal or business and just use it for giving out your address for getting your free stuff.

Be especially careful when signing up for freebies. A lot of times if you don't read over everything, unless you uncheck certain boxes, you will be signing up to receive junk mail from all over the place.
