| | | In need of laptop suggestions! I am looking to get a new laptop. However, I will NOT buy another Dell. I refuse to spend the $$$$$ to get NO service and NO warrenty on the software. The software on the new computer I got from Dell in 2005 had a glitch in it and I have had several problems with it since.
Anyway, I have been pricing them at Radio Shack and Wal-mart and they range from $580 to $900. I don't need a printer. But, I would like Word, DVD, and other things. I noticed most of them have what I want. The problem is which one should I get or should I order online somewhere? I would appreciate any ideas that you could share with me. I do a lot school work, research, and I will be doing work associated with my job as well. Also, I am hoping to be able to get rid of the Vista, which all computers have and download XP instead. Has anyone ever had their built and if so, how was it? |

I agree with don't buy a Dell. Our CD/DVD drive went out (have no clue when/how) and when I checked what could possibly be wrong - discovered that this seems to be a VERY COMMON problem!

| | Why don’t you want Vista? I have XP (laptop) and Vista (desktop). If you want XP, you probably have to order it online since most of the computers sold locally are Vista. Unless, you are willing to pay more to buy XP software and install it yourself or have a computer tech install it for you. I am using a Compaq Presario notebook. I have been using it for over a year. My first problem with it was the motherboard. HP replaced it for free because it was still under warranty. Since the laptop was more than $500, I decided to buy an extra insurance just incase if I accidentally drop it my bathtub - or I accidentally throw it against the wall. The next problem was the DVD handler then the media card. Anyway, it will really depend upon your needs and buy extra insurance even if you think it will not break because it will. Then again, it’s probably just me. Follow the link to customize your own notebook. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh..._components.do
The last time I customized my own notebook it came to 4Gs.

I went to that site and it states "CTO Error Thank you for your interest in this customized series. Due to the tremendous response to this series, this page has become temporarily unavailable."
Maybe I will try again later! Thanks! |

I dont have Vista on my laptop for same reason. I am waiting until most bugs are fixed.
Some would prefer accidentally throwing out the window - it is called Windows.
Sorry about the link. You can pretty much click any of the link for laptops and customize them to your preference.
Goodluck.

| | | Thanks! The weirdest thing happened. Within minutes of visiting that site, I got 3 spam emails with "free laptop of you choice" and stuff like that. It is probably a coincidence. I thought, "If they can't spell YOUR, they probably can't build a computer! lol I will keep checking that site and hopefully it will be back up. |

Is there a BestBuy nearest you or a Geeksquad? A staff from a computer store should be able to give you some insight. The spam is probably problem from their IP tracker but not sure.
You need to scan your puter for some tracker cookies cause I don't think it's a coincidence.

how about a mac? yes, I know they are more expensive, but you get what you pay for...I have never had anything but a mac and probably never will, and now you can even run windows on macs. |

Mrbike, can you tell me why you prefer a Mac? My ds is leaving for college in a few weeks and is planning on buying a new Mac laptop for college.
