Favorite Family Movies

What are some of your favorite movies for the whole family. Something that has something for every one? A movie that isn't condescending to children but is still enjoyable for all ages. Of course, it has a good message and something we can all learn from.

I really enjoyed "A Little Princess." That movie is a classic. It is touching, moving, and smart.

We all enjoy singing to I Have Confidence in the Sound of Music. It is a great song.

We all watched Eragon the other night and it was not the best choice. That is all I will say. :X

I loved this movie we saw on TV a while back called The Climb. They don't make movies like this anymore!!

It starred an adorable Gregory Smith and the always admirable John Hurt.

You can watch some funny clips of the movie here. The character Danny (Gregory) acts like how kids act! He's so adorable.

The movie is always moving but never boring.. I loved it!

My family loves the Homeward Bound movies.

We also enjoyed Finding Nemo.

We all loved the shirley Temple movies and Homeward bound we also like a real classic of Lassie come home.

I liked Now and Then, though that is more of a preteen movie.

Simon Birch is an excellent family movie (though a little sad) The Mighty is another really good movie for families.

I know there is controversy about them, but we really enjoy the Harry Potter movies. 3 of our GKs are not permitted to view them, so we don't show them when they are here. The rest are permitted, and we have watched them together.

Many (but, again, not all) of the Pixar animation movies

Many of the old Bing Crosby movies, like White Christmas
Many of the old Fred Astaire movies
Willow
Yankee Doodle Dandy (old, with James Cagney - the colorized version)
and, of course, the Wizard of Oz.

We have found over the years, however, that no matter the age of the kids we need to watch with them and be ready to interject our own values, true history, or interpret things. With the younger ones, we will stop the movie from time to time and ask what they understand about it. Then we correct their misunderstandings.

There really is no "perfect" movie for kids. We just try to avoid playing movies with too much violence (subjective) or too much "sex" (again, subjective) or "bad" language (once again, subjective). What we consider acceptable often will be unacceptable to others, and what others consider acceptable often will be unacceptable for us.

I'm looking forward to other people's lists. We may want to get some new movies!

Eragon, Ever After, The Pagemaster and Tuck Everlasting are other good family movies that we own. I am also a Christmas fan and have many Christmas movies (Rudolph, Frosty, It's a Wonderful Life, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, A Christmas Story etc.)
