DeBora, Maddie likes the M&M guy (actually the car)and Miriam likes Tony Stewart.
M&M's candy company has a car. Elliott Sadler drove the M&Ms #38 for quite a while. He is a single, attractive man. He now drives the #19 car. Currently, David Gilliland, who is a rookie (this is his first year to drive full-time in the Cup series) is driving the #38, M&M candy car.
Drivers who are rookies are required to place a bright yellow stripe on the back bumpers of their race cars so that other drivers on the track will know that they are rookies. So, if you see that some cars have yellow reflective stripes on the back bumpers of their cars and the some do not, those drivers are rookies.
Rookies aren't new drivers. Most of them come up to the Cup series from the Busch series or Truck series. Some come from the ARCA series, which is a different stock car corporation that is similar to NASCAR. One rookie came from driving Indy cars (Juan Pablo Montoya, #42). I don't believe that there are any rules that state that it is a requirement that new drivers have to have raced professionally in another series, but I don't think any driver could drive well enough to compete in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series unless they have the experience.
What I don't understand tho is why announce the rookie status? Wouldn't that possibly give them an unfair advantage?
Coll, there is a simple reason why the media keeps announcing the rookie status. There is a separate competiton going on between all the rookies that are racing in their first full season of the series. I looked it up for you so that there could be an easy explanation of how the Rookie of the Year works.
I don't know if anybody else watched the Talladega race today? When Bobby first pitted, he was going too fast. He tried to hit the breaks and swerve back onto the track. This locked up his tires and that resulted in one of his front tires blowing out. Since he had to drive the 2.66 miles back to pit road on a flat tire, it tore up his fender a bit. He went 3 laps down. He said on his radio that he should have just gone on into the pits and taken the speeding penalty (end of the longest line) rather than tore his car up. Anyway, he made his 3 laps up and finished in 20th. He lost a position in the posts standings.
He won yesterday's Busch race in a move that I haven't seen him do in years! It was great! He pushed Tony Stewart up to the front and 1,000 feet from the finish line on the last lap, he whipped around Tony for the win!
Next week will be Richmond, VA. I started a Richmond race discussion thread in case anyone wants to discuss it. If there isn't an interest, I probably won't start another one.
