I had to look this up since they JUST changed this season--this month. They added bonus points for winning a race and changed up the points. But I will explain it in as simple terms as possible because I like easy terms that everyone can understand. For each race, the points are as follows:
As you can see by the points, a 50 point penalty really isn't a punishment for cheating, especially if you win or in in the top 12 by the chase.
After 26 races, the top 12 drivers are locked in what is called the "chase." At this point, there are only 10 races left in the season and the top 12 drivers' "scores" are then re-set to 5,000. Plus, for each victory each driver will receive a 10-point bonus. For example, if Racer Bob is in the top 12 he would get 5,000 points. If Racer Bob also won 2 races during those 26 races, he would then have 5,020 points. Does this make since?
Now, the NASCAR Busch and NASCAR Truck series don't use this point system. They still use the old one that I am used to. They have similar point that I first listed (slightly different, with 1st being 175 points). However, they give 5 points bonus for leading a lap and an additional 5 points if they lead the most laps during a race. The driver with the most points wins the championship. Jayski has a site that explains the points for the Cup series. It's a big site and easy to get lost in.
Coll, I hope I was able to explain it well. If not let me know.
I talked to a spotter today and discovered that Bobby did hit the wall when there was about 90 laps left in the race on Sunday. I heard Bobby talking about how his wheel just wouldn't turn. I also knew he had a flat tire. But, that was about it.
Coll, feel free to ask questions anytime. Some races are non-point races so they only cound as for money but not toward championship points. There are usually terms used during the race that you may have questions about. I will be more than glad to answer them anytime. Btw, there is no race this coming weekend.
I like to just pick a guy usually Jeff Gordon, and see if he winns each race he is in.
My idea of a race, Just go and cross the finish line first, LOL.

How DID I know this was going to come up? lol No matter who your favorite driver is, someone is going to dislike him, UNLESS your driver is Bobby Labonte!
