In my psych Emotion and Motivation class we will research horror movies. We have to get insite as to what makes a horror movie scary? I personally do not like them. (We will also study poker players, which is more up my alley!) Anyway, if you are into horror movies, what makes a good scary movie? What makes a good scary main character (monstor, etc...) Is it something or someone who is a predator? What is/are the victim(s) like? What are some good movie set-ups?
I think what makes a good horror movie is when the bad guy is vicious, and always surprises his victims, then you are always on edge becuase you never know when he will appear. I love them and love to scare myself (as long as someone else is there and i am not at home alone, LOL)
Thanks! I know nothing about horror movies as I never watch them. But, I will have to put together a scene by the end of the semester. I am sure when we get put into teams many of the others will be avid horror movie watchers. LOL
I think that it's the viewers imagination that makes the movie scary. For one person it might be Vampire's or werewolves.because they can visualize them and the start to think. maybe they really exist or the v eiwer starts to say humm.So you are watching and your imagination gets going and you listen for every foriegn sound.
I asked my daughter, Laura, to post a reply because she *loves* scary movies.
"What makes a movie really scary for me is when it is a situation that could actually happen, such as Amittyville Horror. My favorite villians are Freddy Kruegar and Hannibal Lecter, because they are scary characters with a sense of humor. To me a good scary movie is something that makes you tense, makes you jump, and makes you laugh....but not because it is stupid (see Scary Movie 1,2,and 3 all will make you laugh, but it is because they are spoofs, not scary). A good victim is smart and believable, none of this Friday the 13th stuff... if you hear that a killer is loose and you hear a noise in the closet, you do NOT open the closet, DUH! That's my two cents, hope it helped."
She says if the victim is stupid they deserve to die. lol
I like "sci-fi" scary movies. The bad guy is usually not human so it is ok for the hero to try to kill him! I don't like a bloody mess, like the chain saw movies. I won't watch the ones that celebrate satan and cruelty.
My absolute favorite scary movie is the origional "Night of the Living Dead" in black and white so the blood isn't as gory. lol
Empty houses, empty parks, after dark, that is the best place to get scared. A beautiful afternoon at the park also works because you don't expect to get scared there.

Linda

Thanks. These are ideas that I can use. Things such as imagination, things that could actually happen, believable victims, empty places, and so on are some excellant ideas for the "recipe" that I'll need for ideas for a horror or scary movie.
I love scary movies. Only one problem, they don't scare me. My dd#1 will watch a movie and tell me it is scary. I'll watch it and tell her I thought it was dumb. The Ring is one of them. I'm always looking for scary movies.
My mom won't watch Freddy Krueger or any of the Children of the Corn movies.

Ring 2 was much better than ring 1 even though the reviews said ring 1 was better. Scary is in the mind of the watcher.
My grandchildren are so scared of "It" that they won't ever watch the movie again and will forever be afraid of clowns. They reacted the same way to the doll movies. Dolls should not be scary, that is just wrong!!!

Linda

I love horror but I won't watch demons or zombies. I had a Haittian grandmother who used to tell us when there was no room in hell the dead will walk the earth. And demons just scare the byjesus out of me. But you can bring the rest of them on and I know how to kill em.
