Question Using MLA Format

I am doing a research of Mountain Climbing using the MLA Format.
Anybody here know of a good site where I can take a look at of how an MLA Format would look like when finished? I already have some information on the history of mountain climbing and would like to get more.
Any tips on MLA Format would be helpful too.Thanks.

Mountaineering

MLA is an abbreviation of Modern Language Association. It is a guide used in writing research paper. MLA style is used to avoid plagiarism and to make sure that proper credits are given to the proper sources to avoid copyright infringement. Do you know if anybody here knows the history of Mountain Climbing point blank?

lrivetz, I actualy DO know what MLA is. English, theater, and other teachers in this field use it. I am more familiea with APA (American Psychologial Association) because I am a psych major. However, I have tutored English and Reading for 3 years, so I am familiear with it. The Modern Language Assoiciation's Webs site is: www.mla.org. Here's something that I found on their site:

What Is MLA Style?

The Modern Language Association does not publish its documentation guidelines on the Web. For an authoritative explanation of MLA style, see the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (for high school and undergraduate college students) and the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (for graduate students, scholars, and professional writers). Please also see frequently asked questions about MLA style.

The style recommended by the association for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers concerns itself with the mechanics of writing, such as punctuation, quotation, and documentation of sources. MLA style has been widely adopted by schools, academic departments, and instructors for nearly half a century.

MLA guidelines are also currently used by over 125 scholarly and literary journals, newsletters, and magazines with circulations over one thousand; by hundreds of smaller periodicals; and by many university and commercial presses. MLA style is commonly followed not only in the United States but in Canada and other countries as well; Japanese translations of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers appeared in 1980, 1984, and 1988, and a Chinese translation was published in 1990.

In a 1991 article on style manuals, Booklist cited MLA documentation style as one of the "big three," along with the guidelines published by the American Psychological Association and the University of Chicago Press.

Click on to the links to see their books on how to write with MLA format. It's actually not too bad compared to APA. Also, there is software for APA and I'm sure that MLA has their version as well. It practically does the work for you.

Next, is this research paper for college? Have you checked at the local college or university's library? Most of them have "hint" pages for both MLA and APA on how to use them. These pages give sample in-text documentation for its uses as well as the Works Cited page samples. I wish I had a copy of it because I could scan it to you. Another thing you can check out at the library is to see if it has a copy of the MLA Handbook for Writer's of Research Papers. The college libraries have them and these days many public libraries have them because so many people are taking online classes. One thing I DO want to point out is the edition number. If it is not 6th edition, let me know and I'll tell you what the difference is. For example, in APA, the old edition underlines certain sources. The main difference in the new edition is that these same sources are italisized. Unless you are an English major, theater major, etc... I won't invest in software, books, etc...

Finally, if your town has a library--preferably a college one--check to see if they have an online research database journals. Most Internet resourses are not reliable and therefore, professors will not accept them. But, the journals are good sources. All you do is type the title of what you are researching and it will give you a list of articles! My college uses FirsSearch.

I just went to my college's webpage and they have the MLA pages that will help you. If you'll PM me your email addy, I'll email them to you.

I actually bought a copy of the MLA sixth edtion by Gibaldi. The instructions are easy to follow. My College instructor wanted a "Title" page and I could not find an explanation on how to format the "Title" page. My "Contents" pages are finish, "Work cited" page is finish as well as my "Bibliography", but not my "Title" page.

lrivetz, MLA does not use a title page, but APA does. I bought the "APA Bible" or the "Big Black Book." I was shocked at the way a write has to document even a conversation with his or her source! lol In any even, many college teachers will ask their students to do things their way, which drives me crazy. LOL One math teacher asked me to write a research paper and took off points because I documented my sources! Of course, that is plagarism! So, many times, a teacher will ask you to write a paper his or her way. Of course, not neccessarily to the point that it is illegal. I will send you an example of an APA title page. Feel free to change the name, title, and so on to fit you. Good luck!

My instructor asked for
1) Title page
2) to 4) Contents
5) Work cited
6) Bibiliography

I am sending you a copy of my research.

I hope you got my revisions on your paper. I had to double check myself on the MLA because I am used to doing APA and I didn't want to give you a marriage of MLA and APA. (One semester I had to write 5 papers, 3 in MLA and 2 in APA. I had to get it double-checked because I DID combine the two.) I've never heard of a teacher having both a bibliography AND a Works Cited. They are both the same thing. If you have the exact instructions that might be helpful. I've seen teachers ask for weirder. LOL

Good luck!

I did receive your input and thank you. I will read them at home because I am at work right now. Yes, I was also confused when my instructor asked for the work cited and bibliography. I asked my instructor and he told me the difference, which really made since. Work cited is when the information is paraphrase or directly quoted and used in my research. Bibliography would be the same except more including the books that I read but did not use any of the information. I will let you know more tomorrow and explain why my paper look like it. I need to double check on my source too.

Maybe APA is different. I am not allowed to use material that I do not use. But, MLA is the language classes which might want you to list all the material that you read. Let me know if you need me to prrof read the bibliography. The good thing about MLA is that it is much easier than APA.
