Search for an Apron

If this thread is in the wrong place please put it where it belongs!!

Okay, I am in search of a certain type of apron!!

My niece is getting married in April. And her bridal shower is in March. I received an invitation to her shower. The invite requested to bring a gift that starts with the letter "A".

I found a wonderful little story about Grandma's apron. My grandma, would be her Great Grandma wore an apron.

Why you might ask am I asking for help???

Well, I was hoping to find an apron like my Grandma wore. The apron she wore was the kind like the Grandma wore on the TV show "The Waltons".

Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to find one of this, at a not too expensive price????

I have already purchased her gift, that is why I would like to keep the cost low.

The writing reminded me soooo much of my Grandma!!!

Here is the writing that I would like to attach to the gift. I will of course change the wording to fit my niece.

My Grandmother "Name removed" always wore an apron around the house. Now I know why.

"Grandma's Apron"

This is precious. I don't think our kids know what an apron IS ...

The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.
Send this to those who would know, and love the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER THIS!

"Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool."

" Her granddaughter's set theirs on the window sill to thaw."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

mom2-4 check at a chef/kitchen store. I know we have one at the mall, but I can't remember the name of it, I've seen those aprons there though. You might check online, type in 'bib apron', might even have some at ebay. Hope you find one in time, I think it's a neat idea and something I'll have to remember.

apron search

I don't remember the apron from the Waltons, but I do know where you might find many types of aprons. My mom & grandmother keep a booth at an antique mall and sell many there. They aquire most of their items for sale by attending auctions. I find a lot of things on E-bay. I'm not sure what type of apron you are looking for. There was a talk given at a regional farm show discussing and show various aprons and their particular functions throughout history. I was not able to go, but I am sure the information is out there somewhere on the internet.
I really enjoyed the story you posted!

Good luck in your search!

Hillary

Also Taste Of Home has a COUNTRY STORE that you can check out online. I know they did have these. Good luck and have fun at the shower and wedding. I still have the half aprons and yes I do use them these belonged to both MY G-Mom and my beloved MIL. Loved both of them dearly and proud to use their aprons.

I would have loved my Grandma's aprons

That second site had beautiful stuff but $50 for an apron...yikes! Wish I could sew!

mom2-4,

Try Walmart for a bib apron. They are plain white. A fun thing to do with it would be to take a nice permanent fabric marker and have all the guests sign it. Or have them sign it and then embroider over the names. Then give it to the Bride.

Coll that is indeed a great idea either way. I am sure the Bride will really love it and appreciate it for years to come. Will have to check out Wal-Mart as want to get one to send to a friend over seas.

Coll.... That is a good idea signing the apron. I have always worn an apron while cooking. Be surprised how many clothes get grease stains without one.
Have a friend that makes them and gives them as gifts to her neighbors. Can always pick up small pieces at the fabric store. ______
