What's your homeschool reading ???

In our house we do alot of reading as a family so there can be discussion of the book. We are always looking for some great book recommendations.


So........

What good book has your family read lately ????

Last year we started reading aloud as an entire family. We read the first two in Frank Baum's Oz series.
I just discovered he wrote a book The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. We are getting ready to start it after the Holiday rush is over.
We also like to listen to book tapes as a family. We have done all the Richard Peck books, they are wonderful family reading. Our favorite is A Long Way To Chicago.

Some of the books we have used so far are:

The Little House on the Prairie Series
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Understood Betsy
Anne of Green Gables Series


We have really noticed a great benefit to reading these aloud as a group instead of just assigning each child their own reading list. It gives the children something in common to talk about even as they play throughout the day. They have also invented games that come from what we've been reading.

What ages are your daughters and how have they liked reading as a family?

We are just now starting the FIAR books. Kaite and the Big Snow will be our first one. We also read books about the subjects we are studying. We just finished a whole bunch of MLK books. Our favorite is ...If You Lived At The Time Of Martin Luther King by Ellen Levine. It borught up court cases, court justices and others not usually known to most people. It sparked exciting conversation and had me on the computer looking up dates for the kids on the things they were very interested in.

right now we (me and the 5 kids) are reading little house in the big woods together and ben (10) and i are reading the hardy boys series aloud too.

My 6 yr old LOVES to read. I can hardly wait until the 4 yr old get there so we can start doing this too.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! My daughters are 9 & 13. My oldest one is a very fast reader and really doesn't need to be read to, but my younger one seems to stumble over some words at times...so when I started reading to her, the older one just started listening in. Next thing you know, it's become a nightly ritual here and we're easily putting an hour an evening into a book.

Even dh has listened in on a book once in a while, it's crazy. I never would have guessed they (or I) would have enjoyed it so much.

My children are 11 yob and 8 (going on 18) yog. We are really enjoying the reading as a family. I just thought of another book that we just LOVED. Cheaper by the Dozen !! Very funny book, kept us laughing the whole way through !!
I know there was another book written after that one also but I heard it wasn't exactly for young kids so we haven't searched that one out yet.
