Need MORE Games

These games are very helpful. Multiplication War is the type I'm especially after. These games are for the schoolkids who need help but don't necessarily have anyone at home to work with them, or access to the internet, where there are zillions of wonderful sites. Games that help them memorize times tables, addition, etc. Had never heard of Farkle before, but I looked it up and it sounds like fun.

Any more ideas out there? Thanks!!!

I hope these sites help. Some I have used, some I have adapted but there are tons of great ideas on these sites.

Any game of cards we play, my youngest keeps score. It's always a challenge for her to add up scores and sometimes we toss in different rules.

For example, the game rummy (which is really easy for a 8-10 year old to learn if you make sets of 3). In this game, if you win you don't get any points--but the loser gets their score multiplied by two. Now, after the first hand is played, whoever loses gets their score multiplied by two, but the player who was the winner gets the losers original amount of points deducted from their score... lol.

Lots of addition, multiplication, & subtraction happening.

And for money games...we play a lot of life and monopoly.

I just read this article on the Dollar Stretcher website.

http://www.stretcher.com/stories/04/04sep06h.cfm

It's about making your own "manipulatives" for math programs. Enjoy!

Since I was needing some math games for the summer this thread had some excellent ideas. I especially like the multiplication one (math wars).

I have a Sum Buddies/Minus Maze board. I do not have the cards, but I would be glad to scan and share the board. This is made by Educational Insights. It is especially good for younger children, such as preschool through 3rd graders. Also, things like dominoes are cool for younger kids. the other day, I bought travel Rummikub, but we haven't put it to use yet. All I can say, is it has number tiles. We also have Sudoku, but are not hip to that game. DS #1 and I are not big math fans. Go figure.

Another fun math game for school-age kids is Rack-o. (It's fun for grownups too, and it goes quick).

It wasn't until I brought the kids into the kitchen that they finally got fractions. Take a recipe and a bunch of different kinds of measuring cups and have them go at it. With or without real food, even water can be fun to use to make up 'portions.'

Depending on their age you can see if they can do conservation techniques, like is the tall glass going to hold more, less, or the same as the short fat glass?
