| One other piece of advice. Teach your son about prepositions. He will never find the subject or the verbs in a prepositional phrase. I teach my students to cross out the prep phrases so they can better find the subject and verbs. Plus, if the verb comes after the prep phrase, the student might think that the verb is modifying the noun at the end of the prep phrase instread of the subject that is located a little further up. For example, The boys with their dog (is/are) playing chase. Many students would pick the verb IS because it is near the noun dog. However, the verb should be ARE because once you cross out the prep phrase WITH THEIR DOG the student can see that the subject is BOYS.I also liked to use the newspaper with my kids, depending on their ages. I would give them a pen and have them disect sentences. Anyway, it is just an idea. |
