Are you growing herbs?

If so, what do you do with them when they are ready to be picked? Do you cook with them, make crafts, use them for aromatherapy...etc?

I don't have many this year. I am missing lemon balm, I use it for tea. Chives and garlic chives are used in pasta salad. Lavender will be used in bath salts and scrubs.

I planted basil, oregano, sage and rosemary. I love making fresh pesto with the basil! I am thinking about growing spearmint as well (for mojitos!), but if so, I will grow it in a pot so it doesn't take over my garden.

At the end of the season I dry whatever herbs we didn't use up.

I would love to grow herbs, I do not lack space but I do lack the knowledge as to how to finish the process.

I love to plant herbs..some I grow for cooking and others I grow for landscaping..a large curly parsley bush looks and smells wonderful in an entry spot near your door..try it out.

Hugs, Jan

Thanks for the reply Jan. I have heard that about the fragrance too so I have a bed right along one side of the deck .....will plant some perennial ones there maybe or will they take over that whole bed?

Any other special tips that I should know for growing herbs?

I'd like to try to grow dill, chives, basil, rosemary, cilantro and thyme.

Good Morning everyone!

I used to start my herbs with seeds, directly in the ground..but it seems like every time I do that..I get a huge rainstorm and the seeds get carried away to my yard, sidewalk cracks, or edging along the sidewalk..and that is where I will get small wimpy starts of herbs.

Now I like to get a good hardy start from the nursery, walmart, etc and starting with plants is the best bet for success, for me.

Hugs, Janet

I agree, Janet. I'm going to try something from seed so that my daughter can watch it grown like our tomatoes did last year. But for the herbs, I think that I will buy plants. If it ever stops raining this weekend, I'd like to start preparing some of this stuff. We are under a tornado watch again today. Spring has come in like a lion this year.
