What do you eat to increase calcium?

I try to eat cottage cheese or a slice of cheese daily.

I drink a glass of skim milk or have yogurt everyday. I also take 2 tums a day...that gives me 1200 mg. of calcium...it is an easy and cheap way to get your calcium.

My mom buys tums at the dollar store - nice flavored ones. I'm bad at taking calcium. In fact the doctor is after me about it. I see him Wed and he'll ask!!!

Caronamy, I take 2 tums 2times a day, that is what my doctor told me to take. My hubby takes a huge calcium pills, Citracal he has osteopenia, early stages of osteo. It runs in his family, so men have to take care of themselves too! Our local hospital has free bone density tests...you put your foot in a thing that looks like a foot bath and they put some gel on your ankle bones and the test takes a few minutes..nothing too it. You are given the results and the results are sent to your doctor. This is how we found out about my hubby's problem so he can prevent problems in the future. They usually start testing after age 40 but now they are telling young people to start taking calcium early...in your 20's, because you start losing calicum in the 30's age group.

I tried the calcium tablets but too hard for me to swallow...I actually have a small mouth, eventhough my hubby says different.

I just got this today from my kraft newletter...

Make the Calcium Connection
3-A-Day for Stronger Bones

A healthy body requires calcium, yet most people do not consume enough of this important mineral. Studies show that 9 out of 10 women, 2 out of 3 kids and 7 out of 10 men do not get the recommended amount of calcium. Calcium builds and maintains strong bones and teeth, helps the heart to pump and puts the flex in our muscles so that we can walk and ride bikes. Getting an adequate amount of calcium throughout life can help lower the risk of developing osteoporosis.

One easy way to help you reach an adequate level is to eat at least three servings of calcium-containing dairy foods per day. Eating 3-A-Day of dairy is a delicious easy way to help build stronger bones and better bodies. In addition to calcium, dairy provides other nutrients including potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins A, D, B12, and riboflavin.

Have one cup of milk at breakfast, a wedge of cheddar cheese at lunch and a cup of yogurt for a snack and your recommended daily intake is well underway. If keeping tabs on calories and fat has you cutting back on dairy foods, try the many lower fat and fat-free varieties of milk, cheese and yogurt.

Dairy is one of the best ways to get calcium, but almonds, sardines, canned salmon (leave in the bones!) and green vegetables can also contribute to your daily calcium supply. Here are some simple, tasty HEALTHY LIVING recipes to help meet your daily calcium needs:

Cheesy Veggie Potato Topping
Quick Quesadilla
Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie

Daily Calcium Requirement (mg)
Kids 1-3 years 500
Kids 4-8 years 800
Preteens/Teens 9-18 years 1300
Adults 19-50 years 1000
51 years + 1200

Calcium

Caronamy, great info in the calcium requirements...did the article also tell the consumer to watch how much caffeine you drink? Protein you eat? Coffee leaches calcium out of the body, and so does too much protein. So that chunk of cheese at lunch isn't going to help you if you down it with a cup of coffee or caffeine drink. That is why most Drs. recommend supplements to help...a person cannot watch every combination they put in their mouths....Everyone ask your Doctor when you have your next yearly physical....just don't go to the doctors when you are sick...he or she needs to see how you are when you are healthy too! Write it done on a list to ask your Doctor...might as well get your money's worth.

Take Care

Janet

I am in the process of reading two very good books on this subject. The Calcium Factor and Death by Diet both are by a chemist named Robert Barefoot and co-authored by an M.D. I have started taking the coral calcium from this man. I have stopped drinking all soda and I feel 100% better. This man has help bring to light that cancer and other diseases cannot survive in an alkalized body. I took the Ph test he recommends and found out my Ph was too acidic since I was drinking several Dr. Peppers a day. The medical establishment knows that the RDA's are set too low. They are set this low to keep us sick so we have to pay for medicines and doctor visits. I highly recommend reading these books. It has surely opened my eyes to how vitamin/mineral deficient we all are. His site is at: http://www.robertbarefoots-coralcalc...com/index.html

BTW, taking Tums every day is not enough. Your body only absorbs 2 % of the calcium in a Tums and that's 20 hours after you take it. I was shocked to find this out.

Re:Calcium

Most of the anti-acids contain approx. 300 mil of calicium each tablet. I eat 2 of those every evening and it also acts as a stool softener.

Take your calcium ladies! I don't have osteoporosis, but I found out that I'm almost an inch shorter than I was 20 years ago. I have other bone problems, like one leg 1 inch shorter than the other for which I wear a 3/4 inch lift in my shoe.
I have started eating Cheerios for breakfast to get the oats, and the milk. I never was a breakfast eater, but that was one concession I've been able to make.
I use Tums too, but don't depend on it for calcium. I like brocoli and eat it 2-3 times a week.

My favorite bumper sticker is:

"If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better
care of myself."

The new extra strength Rolaids they came out with are really good compared to the Tums. And each tablet has 675 mg of calcium!
