Hot cereal

I can tell Autumn is right around the corner because this morning I made myself a big bowl of Hot Cream of Wheat with butter and raisins and took it out on the back patio to eat!! I eat a lot of cream of wheat and oatmeal in these cooler months!
I love a big bowl of Oats with raisins, apples, nuts and a little cream!!!

Yum I love oatmeal!

I have been in the mood for oatmeal lately too! I love the Cinnamon Roll flavored and the apples and cinnamon. Yum, tastes so good on a cold morning. I also had to make chili this week because it's been cold and rainy here. I'm looking forward to Autumn - been craving all kinds of comfort food!

We grew up eating Cream of Wheat

but we would chop up our breakfast sausage and eggs and mix it up with lots of margarine-YUMMY! When I was pregnant, my mother would come to cook for me-(I was HUGE)-and she would sautee onions, green peppers, tomatoes in margarine, along with adding the eggs and with cheese on top of the cream of wheat. It was a complete meal! I couldn't eat meat the entire time I was pregnant, so she would make this for me and it just made me feel great. My dd likes oatmeal...I just can't eat that, but man, you've made me want to get a box of cream of wheat...of course, I'd have to get my mother from Detroit to make it, it just doesn't taste the same without her special touches.

You have to mix it all in

with the sausage or bacon and the margarine. I don't know, among the siblings, we absolutely adored this and ate it nearly every morning!

My dd would die if I tried to give that to her though. She hates eggs, doesn't like the taste of cream of wheat-(though she ate it as a baby)-and isn't a huge fan of sausage either. But, I on the other hand can't eat her oatmeal. My niece and nephew also love oatmeal as well. My mother can't understand this at all because we never ate oatmeal ever growing up, grits either. But, you put oatmeal or grits in front of my daughter or neice/nephew and they will gobble it down!

I really need to put Cream of Wheat on my grocery list for next month...man, I really miss my mother's Cream of Wheat now!

It's only gotten cold here late at night. I just moved here so I'm not sure of the weather yet. Everyone keeps telling me that it is still in the 100's up until Christmas...I will miss fall for a few years while living here. We had a little of it in Tennessee, though it would still be up to the 60-80's until after Christmas as well.

I love making chili too, chicken and dumplings, and making apple butter, smelling the house with fresh apple pies...in fall my mother would make apple turnovers and we would start bringing home leaves to her that she'd dry on the radiator.

leasmom, If you are interested you can make your own cream of wheat instead of buying store-bought. It is most likely less expensive this way, too.

I just happened to find this on yahoo groups last night while browsing:

Creamed Wheat Cereal

3 c. uncooked cracked bulgur wheat
1/2 c. wheat germ

Grind wheat by placing 1/4 c. at a time in your blender or food processor. Process until the wheat is powdered. Store powder in an airtight container on the pantry shelf, or in the refrigerator or freezer in warm weather, for up to 6 months.

To Use: combine 3 1/2 T. of powdered wheat with 1 1/2 cups cold milk in a saucepan. Add a dash of salt and quickly bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes; remove from heat, cover, and let sit for a few minutes before serving.

Hint: To save time in the morning, measure the cereal, milk, and salt into the pan as you are doing your evening chores. Leave the mixture in the refrigerator overnight; cook for 5 minutes on the stove, or 2 minutes
in the microwave.

Hi Leasmom,
Nope, you've not convinced me!!! I still don't want sausage and eggs in my cream of wheat!!!! LOL!!! It's interesting, isn't it, the different things we grow up eating!! For me , when I was little, I loved butter and sugar sandwiches! Oh, and peanut butter and marshmallows on lettuce!!!....but the eggs in the cereal, I just don't know, I JUST don't know!!!! LOL!!!!

have a great day!!

Oooh, I just love hot cereal! Any kind! I also like hot rice with raisins, sugar, cinnamon and milk for breakfast! I like grits too, either with butter, salt and pepper, or with milk and sugar. Does anyone like chocolate malt o meal? That is one of my favorites! Hmm, I might get a box when I get groceries!
