Dh was told today that he has early stage prostate cancer. Now we need to decide on a treatment. I know everyone's cancer is different, but I would welcome any comments on the type of treatment and side effects that anyone may have experienced.
I father had prostate cancer last year. He has clean bill of health now. He is almost 70 yrs old. He had what they call "seeds" put in his prostate. They did it right in the doctors office as an outpatient things. He said he had no side effects. But he did stay away from my dil and granddaughter. My dil was pregnant at the time. He was considered radoative. The doctor did tell him to limit the time he was around small children and pregnant women. Mostly not let them sit on his lap. That is hard for a great grandfather to do. So instead of them visiting my dil he would call every week and talk to my granddaughter.
He had no otherside effects that I know of. The don't need to be removed they disolve.
I will keep you and your dh in my prayers.

Thanks to both of you for keeping our family in your prayers.
I know this much from the little research I have done so far---There is no hurry to make a fast decision, but plenty of time to weight the options and talk to others who have gone thru the process already.
The seed radiation does seem to be a treatment that allows you to get back to your everyday life much sooner. Long term data doesn't seem to be available for cases like my Dh who is only 53.
I welcome all comments and experiences. The more information we have will help us make a decision that is best for my Dh and our family.
Sorry to hear about your Dh my prayers are with him.
I live in an adult community where this procedure is common. So far all have had good results. They used the gold seed which is not radioactive like the other seed. It is done every day for about nine weeks. Most places were close by and only took a few minutes in the doctors office.

Joy, my dad had prostate cancer a couple of years ago. I guess he was around 67 at the time. He had surgery (recovery would have been a snap but he insisted on getting back on his bicycle before being fully healed) and then radiation treatment. That was done each day for several weeks. He responded well to the treatment and is now fine.
I am hoping the same is true for your DH. Make sure you tell him, no bicycle riding before the doctor says it's OK!
I too have not had any personal experience with this but hope that all will turn out well for your dh whatever decision he makes on a treatment plan.. And you are right, knowledge is a good thing to have it seems to me doctors have a certain way they handle things and don't always tell you all your options.

Joy, you and your dh are in my prayers. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I know he had shots but that was about it. The doctor did not recommend any other form of treatment but then my dad was much older than your dh when diagnosed.
