migraine headache

Is there anyone here who is also suffering from migraine headaches? If you are, could you please share how you treat the pain? Right now, I watch my sleep, took off caffeine and take pain relievers [link removed by moderator. Links such as these can be considered SPAM and will result in the member being banned from FC. I get migraines at times also. not as often as I use to though. My head pain gets bad, but I usually just ride it out although even laying down on a soft pillow hurts. Sometimes a hot bath with a cold wash rag on my head seems to bring me a little comfort. I am sorry I am not much help here, but I feel your pain.

Smartrose, first, I want to officially welcome you to Family Corner.

Next, I want to direct you to the Introduce Yourself forum. Pop over there and introduce yourself. You will find a wonderful welcoming committee and information about our wonderful site and great bunch of folks here.

Finally, I have suffered from severe headaches for many, many years. I tried everything from watching what I eat, monitoring my sleep, and so on. I have tried the whole gambit of drugs and nothing worked. I had one pain specialist in TX that just wanted to give me narcotics. Nothing worked and I did not want to sit on the couch, drugged, all day, still having headaches. I eventually found a terrific pain specialist in NM who tried RFT nerve blocks on me. They last anywhere between 9-12 months. I have had excellent success with these. When I start having minor breakthrough headaches that are bearable, that is when I make the appointment for the next one. I don't want to wait too long once I start having them as they will get worse and worse until I have a nerve block. I had the steroid kind once and they didn't work. I also have discovered that if the doctor cranks up the intensity of the RFT nerve block machine, it lasts longer and better. It uses radio frequencies to deaden the nerves in the head that send messages that you are in pain. It does not numb you, but rather it makes you feel like a "normal" person with little to no headaches. At least, that has been my experience. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. You will be numb in the back of your head for the rest of the day after your procedure. The next day, you will be sore as if you bumped your head pretty good. That is all.

Before the RFT nerve block, I thought there was no hope for me. I'll be glad to answer any questions that you have. You will have to call pain specialists to find out who, if anyone, does these.

Hi Smartrose and welcome to FC! My two dds and dh get migraines. The kind that makes them sick in their stomachs. If they can forestall them with cold compresses, ibuprofen, relax/sleep it is best. Once they are full blown they like to sleep them off, sometimes it takes a day or so.

We don't do medications so I don't have any advice there.

I have some success with homeopathy so you might want to see if that will help. Here is a website. http://innerhealth.us/blog2/homeopathy-radio/ and you may have a listing in your state of certified homeopaths, get certified ones.

I hate to see migraines, they are awful, I feel for you.

Sometimes I get relief by pinching the area on my hand where the most skin is between the thumb and forefinger. I use the thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand and squeeze the nerve and apply a steady pressure. It is somewhat painful, but seems to relieve the pressure of the migraine not permanently, but relief none the less. During a migraine any relief is a blessing.

I noted .. oreo cookies (more than two), a specific gourmet chocolatier, and MSG were all triggers. Limiting my diet has reduced the number of headaches substantially.

If you can find triggers.. you may be able to find relief.

I get migraines from time to time as well. If I don't take something when I get a regular headache it will most definetly progress into a migraine. But I know when it starts out if it's a regular one or a migraine. If it starts out as a migraine, there's nothing I can do or take to get rid of it. I will go to bed as soon as possible, turn out all lights, put an ice pack on my head/eyes and wait til I have to throw up. I can not function when I have these! I just have to wait it out.

On a side note, I have a friend on another forum that has migraines as well. She was having one the other day and had a nose bleed during it. She is having tests run. But have any of you ever experienced that?? or ever heard tell of it?

I kept a food diary to try and figure what triggered my migrane headache. I use to get them quite frequently and I was very miserable. For me, the trigger was seafood, especially shrimp, something I love to eat, but is now a no-no item.

I 'm not a person to be drugged up, I want to be conscience when my family is around, not in la-la land.

Headaches and migraines are really painful at times, but if you can get to them quick enough before they really set in then you can eliminate them in a few ways

Apply pressure with your index fingers to the tips of your thumbs and move your index fingers in a circular motion with a little pressure

or

You can get some herbal tablets from a health store called feverfew, I use these and they do help

or aromatherapy
Aromatherapy Blend #1 - Migraines related with negative emotions

3 drops Roman Chamomile
8 drops Lavender

Aromatherapy blend #2 - Migraines related with muscular tension

4 drops Lavender
5 drops Peppermint

Massage the forehead, temples, neck and shoulders.

Aromatherapy blend #3 - Migraines related with nervous tension

3 drops Roman Chamomile

3 drops Neroli
5 drops Marjoram

Massage the forehead, temples and solar plexus. Breathe it in deeply. Pour 15 drops of this aromatic blend into the bathtub and soak for at least 15 minutes.

Hope some of these can help

I take 1 Imitrex and 1 Naproxen just as soon as I feel a migraine coming on. I take both pills and lie down.

I have a nerve block scheduled on Wednesday for my severe headaches. It takes 5 minutes and I am slightly sore for 1 day and it lasts for months and months and months! It's been almost a year since I've had one.
