Hives!!!

I was hoping someone around this big site of ours...that has something similar to my moms!! She has hives REAL BAD not just the normal ones either, that go away with Benedryl!!! of course they cant get it down to something she eats or anything easy like laundry soap!! {she has told me the name of it but I cant think of it.} IF there is something they could give her just to make her comfortable!! would be GREAT!!!! someone thought it was in her house, but recently on a trip she still had them!!! any suggestions would be great!!!!!

i would suggest your mother check with her family Doctor for a Dermatologist.

If you don't have a family doctor, call your local hospital and they can refer one to you.. Just ask them for a Dermatological referral...

I agree a doctor is needed. A prescription med is hydroczine (sp). My dd uses it for her food allergies and it works. If you have to take more than one dose it will knock you out for days. Also a little bit of baking soda in a glass of water sometimes works.

I was going to suggest that they might be caused by anxiety. I get hives periodically because of that. Thank God it usually goes away on it's own, but dd#1 has hives too-also from anxiety and she has to take nerve pills or anti-anxiety/depression medication like Paxil. This might be an area to look at.
Hope she can find something soon-I know how bad the iching can get.....

Some things that might also help:

Soaking in a oatmeal bath, just grind oatmeal in the blender add baking soda and starch and soak.

Use a clear unscented glycerin soap.

Throw away any store made hand soaps, deoderant, most contain aluminum bases that can irritate. Use baking powder/corn starch mix and powder everywhere the hives are.

Also, Pine Tar Soap found in most health food stores... helps tremendously with itching. Dh uses it when he's been exposed to Poison Ivy.

hives

I so feel for your mother, I have had the same problem for 25 years. I have had all the tests done but they could not find the cause.
The one thing that will get rid of them for me (for a day or two) is Atarax. It makes you sleepy but is well worth that for the relief.

That is what dd takes for allergic reactions! It does work.

hIVES

About 5 years ago I had the same thing; unexplainable hives.

Unfortunately, there was never a diagnosis. I had 3 courses of steroids, skin samples taken and I changed everything I could think of. I was so desperate I used flea shampoo on my skin to see if maybe it was a parasite.

It lasted for four months and after 3 trips to the emergency room my doctor met me there and treated me like I had an allergic reaction. I was given epinephrine and a shot of a steroid I can't remember the name of (Think it started with a 'D'). I refused the Benadryl because I had to drive myself home.

After a half hour they were gone and they never returned.

During this time I used Ambien to get to sleep. For some reason the Ambien quieted the hives and I wouldn't start scratching again until it wore off.

The strange thing is that my niece had the same problem 2 years before and my ex-husband and a friend of ours had the same thing at just about the same time. None of the doctors could figure it out.

Hopefully, this course of treatment will work.
