I just got a new haircut and my natural waves are getting more curly. I love it, but when I brush my hair it just frizzes out and I lose the curl. How do I keep my hair neat and still keep the curl?
My two daughters have what we call 'shampoo ad' hair. One is long and silky and the other wavy and bouncy. The long and silky uses Sunsilk Anti-Flat and the bouncy says it would frizz just like you described if she didn't use Pantene made for smoothing or something like that. They both use hairbrushes we got from the hairdresser, vent brushes with rubber tips on the prongs and about medium spacing on the teeth. My hair is layered now and waves like you described and it holds up well with some gel and a quick blow dry, even without the blow dry. Must be the gel.

Barbszy, I, too, have wavy hair and the same thing happens to my hair if a brush it. Frizz city.
What works for me is putting some styling gel in my hair while still wet and combing it through with a pick. Then I blow dry it till not quite dry and add a touch of hairspray.
In the SUMMER when my hair tends to frizz even more, I trade the gel for a leave in hair conditioner and skip the blowdrying.
I have natural curly hair too and I haven't brushed or combed it in years.
I put in a little gel and kind of "scrunch" with my fingers. After it dries, you can pick out with your fingers and it generally holds pretty well. If I need to dry it faster, I use a defuser that goes on the end of my hair dryer.
It seems though when it's really humid, nothing I do helps and I end up frizzy. The more I mess with the frizzier it becomes. Thats when I get a hair clamp and pile it on the top of my head. That's cute sometimes because you get the little curly "angel hair" that frames your face. I bet your new hair cute is darling!
Pam, how do you untangle it if you don't comb or brush it? What do you do after you wash it?
I just have no clue how to handle this new texture in my hair.
Today after my shower (I used shampoo and conditioner) I combed it out. I didn't rub it with the towel, just wrapped it for a while and then put the towel over my shoulders so my top wouldn't get soaked. Then I put on a little hair gel. My hair looked almost straight. By the time it dried all the way, all the waves were back. I never combed or brushed it after that first bit. It's better today, less "fuzzy" than it has looked after I've combed or brushed it.
I NEVER use a blow dryer. All I use on wet hair is a pick or wide tooth comb.
Barb, I too have wavy hair (that banana curls when long) ..
I wash and condition my hair, not rinsing out allll the conditioner.( if it's "squeeky clean" it's not good) There are no tangles to comb out if you condition it well.
I do towel dry my hair, and add Friz-eze serum or Tres-eme "anti frizz secret" creme. The gel makes my hair too "crispy" looking (and feeling) and I don't like the "wet" look that gel gives me.
After towel drying, I put a nickle size dolllop of the cream in my palms and rub my hands together. Then bending over, I start from the underside of my hair and finger the product through my hair, scrunching and rubbing my hair betwen my fingers, saving the crown and top of my hair for last. I wash my hands and finish scrunching the stuff all the way through.
My hair air-dries, and I don't get any frizz except on the most humid days. In that case, I use Friz-eze hair spray to control the frizz.
Alternatively, after putting the cream in my hair, I will blow-dry with a thick, round perforated brush on low heat and low air flow. It takes a long time, because I have to follow up with cool air to set it.
Anything that's silicone based will seal your hair from moisture and control the frizz.
Barb: My hair is thin and fine so it doesn't usually tangle. I just use my fingers when I put the gel in and kind of "comb" it that way, then scrunch it a little.
I use Bed Head Control Freak gel -- a little pricey, but a little dab will do you -- seems to last forever. It doesn't make it look "wet" or "crispy" when you pick it out with your fingers after it dries.
