Hair Spray or Gel?

I am growing out a very short layered cut so I've been needing to use something to keep my hair "in place" and out of my face. Right now my hair is a little longer than you see in my profile picture, with a very light bang (which I'll be keeping).

I don't like the way hair spray makes my hair feel, all hard and stuck together.

I do use a little gel while my hair is wet, to give it some body at the top.

What can I use when my hair is dry, and there are just a couple of spots that don't want to stay where they should--without having it be really noticable that there's "hair product" in there?

Barb,
I find that Suave Professionals super shaping spray works well for me. Its not so stiff and sticky as other products I have tried! Its cheap too!

I usually use hair gel (no particular brand). I put it in my hair when it's wet. Then I comb my hair again once it's dry. The style stays and you can't feel anything in the hair.

I use a hairgel (Wella) stronghold and finger it through my hair when wet. I then let it dry how I've combed it or blowdry to the style. I like it tucked behind my ears so comb it that way and let dry most days. I do find that there are different hairsprays that have different dry feels not all are shellacky/sticky.
I use a hairspray when I go out, if it flops I run my fingers under water and comb my hair like that and it seems to set again.
I'm growing my hair out to so can commiserate with you LOL
How about a couple of your hair coloured bobby pins, combs or some funky clips, if only when you're at home to keep it out of your face.
I put mine in a ponytail that is all of 3 inches long at home.
