Everyone is welcome to participate in our Grocery Challenge!
Here's how it works:
Tell us your family size, and your intended food budget for the month. Also tell what "nonfood" items it includes: cleaning supplies, pet foods, paper products, greeting cards.... Then as the month goes along, track how you are doing.
I have 5 in my family including a teenage boy. I'm aiming for $450 for the month of December. That includes cleaning supplies and paper products but not greeting cards or birdseed.
Subbing, I have shopped today but have not had time to add it up.

I'm shooting for $350 (at least that's what I think I said last month) for our family of 5 + 1 large dog. This includes paper products (tp, paper towel, kleenex, etc.), personal hygiene and cleaning supplies.
Since I messed up and put too much in the German bank account (over 300 Euros or $445 too much) most of our shopping will be done on the German economy this month.
That being said, I spent 49.49 Euros ($73.02) yesterday.
I'm going to keep to my previous goal of under $450 per month. We're just two adults, but we eat three meals a day either at home or carried to work and eat out infrequently. DS will be coming home for half the month for Christmas break, and his girlfriend will be here for part of that. You just know I'm going to want to fuss over them! We'll see how this goes.
Liz ~ we have been eating 3 meals a day at home too. Breakfast is only cold cereal if we are running really late. We've been using Hillbilly Housewife's menu plan for the most part. Somethings (hot dog stir-fry? eew!) we just won't try.
Vicki,
I agree about the hot dog stir fry -- but I was intrigued, so I went to the Hillbilly Housewife website just to check it out. I found it under "florescent foods" which should have been my first clue -- I have to really second the ewwww!
I finally went to the grocery store yesterday for the first time this month -- my list was quite long and I did want to get some baking ingredients, so I spent $100.37.
Goal for December: under $450.00
12/8/07 Weis $100.37
Balance remaining: $349.63
Hi all I finally sat down and added up my reciepts. I spent $56.68 at Kroger & $112.14 at Sam's. Total-$168.82. I'm keeping my goal at $550.00 for 3 adults & 1 child. I have 2 or 3 other adults who come for dinner often(adult kids)
Goal-$550.00
Spent-$168.82

So far I have never been able to stay even close to my goal and I have decided to wait until Jan and try to start again. I seem to be buying or making so much extra stuff from Thanksgiving - the end of the year. This is one area that I can cut back and I just need to figure out how to.
