I have been using the cloth bags for over 20 years. At first I only used them for groceries, but when all the others stores started selling them I started using them everywhere. I like the original canvas ones I got 20 years ago from Almacs which is now out of business. I switched to the flat bottom ones but they aren't as durable. I use the canvas ones when I need to carry heavy stuff. I keep most of them in my car trunk, but have a few in hubby's car in case we go in his car. I got one of those bottle separators at Trader Joe's so I could carry water bottles with me to bowling. I should throw that in my trunk too for when I buy glass bottles...never thought of that.
I'm working on hubby to get the paper sacs when he shops so I can use them for newspaper recycling. He's a tough sell. At least he's starting to refuse a bag when it's only one item. Small victories, small victories.

I get the paper bags with handles if I don't have enough cloth bags when I go to Farm Fresh and I use them to put newspaper in and the glossy things in another one. I send the newspaper part to SPCA and glossy goes in recycle. I have a Trader Joe bag too they are nice.

I have what we call over here 'green bags', about 8 and 2 small cold bags along the same lines I use for all my grocery shopping.

I think they refer to them as "green " bags here too Kathy. And quite a few that I have are green. I use them too when Stacie & I go to the used book store to carry ones we are turning in and to bring out the ones we buy. I use the brown bags with handles from Farm Fresh to put in stuff that Freecyclers pick up. Got a lady coming after 2 ~ 3# coffee cans and they are out in one now on a chair on my porch. She is bringing me some paper back books to read too. Nice exchange and after I read the books Stacie will then we will turn them in.

Since the original green bags came out in green only other colours are now out there but it's still referred to as a green bag even though it's blue or pink LOL

I was at Joann Fabrics day before yesterday and they have some really nice ones they are made out of some kind of heavy duty plastic like some of the dog food bags are made out of now with crafty sayings on it, they were $1.99 a piece I bought 2 but will probably buy more as they are long lasting, durable and easy to spray and wipe down.

It's great to hear that so many people are using the cloth bags. I do see more and more people using them, especially at the stores that give you a 5 cent credit for using them. I have mostly the flimsy ones that I've gotten for $1.00 or less. I do have a really nice one that I got free. I can't remember where I got it but it's purple and very strong. I got a pattern on sale at Hobby Lobby awhile back to make a few different styles so I can make my own. I want to make them much sturdier. I like the idea of the compartments.

The one pet peeve I do have is using them at WM. For some reason, the cloth bags really seem to stump the cashiers there. And if I'm not paying attention they will put two gallons of milk in one bag. I have to tell them I don't need bags for milk - they have handles for carrying! I have even had cashiers put my stuff in plastic bags and then into the cloth bag! I have to "politely" tell them not to do that!

The only time I like plastic bags in my backs is for raw meat.

I like that you can throw your bags in the wash if they get wet (with condensation and the like) or dirty. I tie the tops and they groceries don't fall over in the car and of course the knots in the handles are easier to undo.

Here National Geographic stores if you say no bags will put 10 cents out of the till into a donation jar for the World Wildlife Fund
