Question Genealogy

Is anyone out there into genealogy?

I have just started searching my family history and I'm finding it very interesting but also difficult. Just wondered if anyone else was doing this and if so what sites are you using? Any advise for a beginner?

I've looked up my grandparents at www.ellisisland.org
It's an interesting site, and you don't have to pay anything to do a simple search.

I go to www.cyndislist.com a lot, there are links to tons of sites. Another good one is www.familysearch.org ( this is the LDS site ), lots of info there. I used to go to www.ancestry.com but I didn't use that one enough to warrant the subscription fee.

Happy hunting!

Hey thanks for the great links. I have a trial membership at ancestry.com and I have visited myfamilytree.com. I am anxious to try these sites too.

Question ancestors

I, too appreciate the lists because my hard drive crashed and I lost a lot of stuff. I've been having a hard time making myself get back to it but now maybe I will. It is very difficult to do unless you have the money to pay for subscriptions. The best advice I can give you is if you have any older relatives, go visit them and take a tape recorder or notepad and drill them for any memory they can give you. Also, most libraries have information that you can get for free. Remember to back up any info you put on your hard drive. Good luck.

I know that if you have the time and the money this can be a very exciting and rewarding hobby. My husbands Aunt and Uncle have been doing their family tree and they have traveled all over the SE United States to find info. We have enjoyed doing the searching with them when they come here. I'm just small time though I don't have the money to travel too far off. I do plan though to travel up to Kentucky sometime to trace some of my mothers family. My fathers family tree was already done by my uncle, so I don't have to do that one. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

chuckle Genealogy sites to try.

Hi kimmyo,

I've been doing our families genealogy for years. The sites I use most are these ;

www.usgenweb.com www.Genforum.com www.rootsweb.com

Genweb will get you to the places you need, genforum and rootsweb will get you to the surnames you need.
Good luck,
spacedup in IN..

Searching ; FRIDLEY-DAVIS-RYAN-CLARK-LAY****-STAMM-WAYMIRE-ROGERS, NC>IN, -REASON-CARVER NORTHEASTERN-STOUT-WEBB-WARD-FRANKLIN-LAWRENCE-ect....

Thanks for the sites Spacedup. I am searching Vernon-Rider-Sullivan-Walker-Pickering-Jackson-Ferguson-Guyman-Clements-Pinkerton-Pease-Ruggles-Myers-Arnold-Kindler and Lewis. Those are my great great grandparents. I figure if I get that much info, maybe one of my grandkids will pick up where I left off at. ;-)

spacedup and ladyinmaille thanks for the input! I will definitely look into those sites! I am currently researching the following surnames:

Lewis, Radcliffe, Burgess and Midall most of whom should be from Kentucky

chuckle Your welcome ladies.

Your very welcome and I hope they help you out. I have been using them for many years now. I'd be lost without them I'm sure.

I see we all have some LEWIS lines. :p I didn't add mine, as I was getting many names in there the way it was.

My LEWIS line is my grandmothers family and a litte confusing, LEWIS was her aunts married name and they adopted her so she carried the name after adoption.

I'm not sure where they were from because I've not shearched them out yet...was in Tipton Co., IN..
The LEWIS married a STOUT so if you have any connection there I'd be happy to add to your growing list of names.

Good luck in your searchings,
spacedup in IN..

Search until you can no longer and then let somone else take it over.
