Tomatoes for Apts.

I've always been in a house and when I moved to an apt. losing my mini garden broke my heart so I found a solution. I purchased 6 ex-large self watering pots 24" and planted cherry & roma tomatoes plants in them. I had saved 2 liter pop bottles and cut the bottoms off. The bottles served two purposes: 1.) by covering the baby plants they were kept warm from brief temperature snaps and 2.) gave them support to the base stem and minimized weeds. After they reach 2' I add a cage to the pot. And have enough tomatoes for salads all summer. This year I would like to grow cucumbers for my guinea pigs any ideas how this could be done in a pot?

I am for the first time growing tomatoes from seed. My Dad just bought the Tomato Tree that comes on a 6 foot stand and the tomatoes grow upside down. (which I think would be super for an apt. balcony) We liked the idea because of the bugs here. (and ducks and iguanas) My tom's really need to be transplanted but now must wait for the post to deliver this "device". I am new to this and am trying not to get water on the leaves, but they are going to need some support soon! Here they are - not bad for a newbie! (these are beefsteaks btw).

CalGalInFla I would suggest the self watering pots they have two types the pots that sit on the ground and the hanging plant pots that can hang on a hook. I fill a two liter pop bottle with water and put in the watering hole at botte side doesn't over water because plant onle takes what it needs. Bonus never get water on the leaves. I worked at a Home improvement center like Home Depot and they are sold there.
