wintersowing

I thought we should start our own thread since we had hijacked the seed catalogues thread.

wintersowing is starting seeds in containers outside in the winter.

any questions, ask me. I'm by no means an expert - this is only my 2nd year - but I will try to answer any questions.

see www.wintersown.org for 2 sase seed offers. one for tomatoes and one for flowers. All seeds in the offers can be wintersown.

I got it half right! How do you stop the seeds from rotting in the soil? do you do sand on top?

nope, they stay frozen til the temps warm up and then moist til they germinate. basically the containers create mini green houses.

Very interesting ideas. I had never heard of this type of gardening. Gives you a good jump start to gardening especially when you have a short growing season.

I've saved some flower seeds that do tend to replant themselves but not in the location that I want LOL. I'll have to give this a try.

Well I have saved two of the one gallon milk jugs from recycling this week and set them aside to try some wintersowing. I might try one vegetable and one flower in each.

ellen, good luck with them! this is so addicting. I did over 160 containers last year and am already at 87 this year and running out of containers to use! lol I did a lot of veggies and prairie plants and need to get working on other perennials and annuals. just gotta get my butt in gear!

I am getting started this afternoon with ours. I am using it as part of science class for my kids.

We have a pile of jugs waiting in the house too! We have planted some and have little green plants!! You can't put anything in the ground until the middle of May so I think we will be okay. I keep waiting for a nice day to fill these milk jugs but haven't had one. I think we will work on it today no matter the weather. If it is too cool for dd then ds and I will do it.

Did you send off for the 'free' seeds? I did and was impressed with what I recieved.

I haven't done anything yet but I figure since we don't plant until May I still have time to have some little seedlings. I saved bell pepper and squash seeds that I want to try and some flower seeds. I don't have anything to loose since the seeds were free.
