chuckle Our gardening project this year - great recycling project

Since we don't have any room for a real garden at our apt., I've had to come up with some creative gardening. A couple of weeks ago, we found 8 hard plastic soda boxes - the kind that hold 8 - 2 liter soda bottles - sitting by the dumpster in our area.

I took them and cleaned them up. We've been saving soda bottles to use for planters. I'm going to cut the bottles in half and then plant seeds in the bottom halves. I can use the tops of the bottles to cover them up until they sprout or if any of them need a cover outside.

We will be planting tomatoes, some herbs, some strawberries (trying a topsy turvy for this one) and some flowers so far. Not sure what else we might try.

Now we have to come up with some sort of platform or wheeled "thing" to push them out in the sun and bring them back into our porch area at night.

When we start the project, I'm going to blog about it so I will upload pics and links along the way.

Any tips or suggestions are welcomed. I'm still winging it. lol!!

What a wonderful idea! I have a stack of those things from when we used to buy 2 liters all the time! I would be very interested in the wheeled thingy you came up with to move them in and out of the sun..... can you post a picture of that aslso? Thanks!

poke drain and air holes in the bottom of the bottles, if they are deep they will be good for tomatoes and peppers, really cool idea, thanks!

Thanks!

The weather took a turn for cold again so we will be waiting a bit longer to plant anything. I'm going to try some herbs indoors in the meantime.

Ellen, good suggestion for leaving them taller for the tomatoes and peppers.

As for the wheeled thing, no plans yet. We have been searching for some type of 2 or 3 level cart but so far nothing that I can afford. I hate living in an apt. for this reason...no room. Hopefully we will change that this summer.
I'm still thinking about it. If you can think of anything, please let me know.

I have so much updating to do here and pics to show you! I've harvested two huge batches of herbs already, along with some daily picking of the herbs. .

As soon as I can, I will show pics of our stand that we devised. I wish that I would've taken pics of the herbs before I gave them haircuts. lol! I have four bags of herbs in the freezer and my cats have been really enjoying the fresh (and dried) catnip!
