Sueanne, I love roses and yours are beautiful. I've got a few rose bushes too. Red, yellow, pink and white roses. Your garden is great too!

"Cut and Come Again" Zinnias are super simple to grow for kids. Throw seeds in soil and let them grow. The more you cut them to put in bouquets the more they "come again". They come in great variety of colors and smell ok too. Kids love to smell flowers and Marigolds stink to high heaven so that's something to consider.
Sunflowers sometimes don't like being transplanted. Start Sunflower seed in the house early in peat pots and then you can plant pot and all in the garden when the weather is warmer.

We ended up planting some wild flowers. We have these funny tree-looking plants growing like crazy. I should take a pic of them and post them so that maybe someone could tell me what they are.
We also planted seed for cherry tomatoes. As of today, there are 16 little tomatoes growing on our plants!!!

I have found that any of the zinnias are great for kids- lots of sizes and colors are available. They look great in long lasting arrangements when and will bloom right on until frost. My older kids and my youngest now love to take arrangements to teachers, daycare providers, grandmas, neighbors, etc. I save old jars and pick up vases for a quarter or less at yard sales to deliver the bouquets in. It never fails to make the giver and recipients' day to do this.

My daughter's class planted zinnia seeds from her teacher's garden and sunflower seeds from another teacher's garden. The sunflower is growing like crazy and the zinnias are little sprouts right now.
I'm planning on taking my kids to buy some easy-to-grow plants as soon as school is out. I want them to have fun growing something this year.

Lavender is pretty easy to grow too... I bought a very large pot last year (Walmarts $8) late in the summer, I'd say around July and put in dirt and seeds and by the fall they had grown enough to have the little purple flowers on them. Over winter I was supposed to cover them with newspapers but kept forgetting but lo and behold, this summer they are growing like crazy. And the nice thing is their a perennial so they'll just keep growing every year... I plan to get another pot and transplant some of them.
Sunflowers planted in the ground grow easy too... we have been planting the Mammoth Sunflowers which grow about 7 feet tall I believe and they are pretty much maintenance free and forgiving if you forget to water them. A added bonus is you can hull the seeds (just use a fork and pull downward and eat them) save some to plant next year, store in a tin.
