High Altitude SW Gardening!! HELP!!

I am from PA where I grew everything and it flourished! People would give me their dying plants and I'd bring them back to life!
I now live at 8,000 ft in SW Colorado and EVERYTHING I've planted has died! Can someone give me some direction?

high altitude gardening

Gardening up here can be pretty tricky even if you have lived here a long time. My mil has lived here for more than 30 years and she has most of it down pat, but still has problems sometimes. I do know that the growing season is VERY short. We are at about 7,000 feet and our last frost is around the first week of June and the first one is about the 15th of September. It might be a good idea to invest in Walls of water, I use these for my tomatoes and they usually do wonderful, nice big plants and lots of tomatoes. Starting seeds indoors is also a good idea. I try to start them in the bigger peat pots so they don't outgrow the pots before I can put them out. After the plants are out, you might have to still cover the baby plants with plastic at night, and uncover them in the day so they don't get too got under the plastic. I am NOT a master gardner, but hope this helps.

Hey Neighbor! I guess were not far from each other at all. Small world! I'm north from the town of Bayfield. I seem to be in a micro-climate where it snows 1 foot deeper for about 1 mile around my house. I can put a marker on the street where it's an obvious difference everytime it snows.

I appreciate the advice and will definitely take it.....and may leave you more emails for more advice!

Is there a gardening club around here or some classes?

Keep in touch!

Sunny

Small World!

HI!

It is so fun to see how small the world really is! I live in Mancos. My cousin lives in Bayfield. Do you come into Durango very often? I do my shopping there pretty much every week. Email me if you would like to meet.

I know a girl in Cortez that has taken a Master Gardener class. I could ask her about other classes. Also, you might try the Colorado State University Extension Office in Durango. THey would be able to answer plant questions, garden questions as well as class questions too, I am sure.

Take care.

We're Practically Neighbors!

I am In Pagosa Springs for today, then I've got one day (Wednesday) to pack and shop and do housework and pre-cook meals, Thursdays I'm off to Denver for one week. I'll give you a jingle (email) when I return and we can have lunch or something in Durango if that's okay with you! (OR I know the owner of Rustler's Roost in Mancos...would you want to go horseback riding?)

I also will contact the extension office and maybe chit chat with your friend who is the Master Gardener! Would love to make a garden happen here!

Looking forward to meeting you! I can't believe your around the corner!!
