I wanted to share this tip I heard on the gardening show last week.

Buy a cheap laundry basket that has holes in the sides... put some holes in the bottom for drainage. Put in your dirt and add potato starters to grow your own potatoes.

I don't know about you all's neck of the woods but here this past year, cucumbers have been as high as 85 cents, potatoes a 3 lb. bag over $6.00 and onions have doubled in price. I can't remember if I mentioned in my previous post but we are growing onions for the first time this year, will chop and freeze what isn't used.

Thumbs up

Hi Sueanne
The one lost was a year old, scrawny to begin
with and only 4' high. Frost took it all the way
down to it's feet.
We've had other papayas but they only last
about 3 years. Was really hoping the scrawny
bugger would hold on but it didn't! The
UNEXPECTED frost did its toll!
My son maintains the veggies and did an excellent job with the brussel sprouts by taking all the lower leaves off as they began
growing. It makes room for the sprouts to begin and the plants become tall-always maintaining some leaves on the very top.
He did the collards the same way and being they are so old they now look like small papaya trees. Smaller leaves are just Mmmm, yummy!
The water is the worst here! We have a
filtering system installed right at the main so
the plants are getting halfway decent water
however I also have a filter at my kitchen sink
and also one for the ice cube maker and we
go thru quite a bit of both being it tastes so
good! I like changing ALL the filters every 4 months.
Happy Gardening!

This year our garden will be a lot smaller than normal.I won't have much extra help with taking care of it.

Well, we were ahead of our time. We always had a veggie garden when the kids were small. Sometimes their punishment would be to go out and weed the garden, LOL. Now we are in a condo, so forget the veggies (although it seems to be the popular thing to do), and we just enjoy our flowers. We do hang strawberry plants that we got at WalMart last year for $8.00, and we picked strawberries all summer from that one plant. This year we are going to have two, and have discovered that the ones from last year have reseeded themselves in the plant hanger!, so that was a nice thrill.

We are growing flowers, weeds, & veggies..but not as much as in years past. Our growing season is very short.

Hugs, Janet

Picked my first squashes today. They were green and hiding under the large leaves. I laughed when I spotted them. They weighed four pounds each. Cooked one tonight already cut it like french fries and added it to the one pot meal with chopped meat. It had very little seeds and very tender skin. Hope the plants last till frost.

In my vegetable garden I'll plant Jersey Tomatoes & Cherry tomatoes, Cucumbers, Red & Green Peppers, Bush Beans, Carrots & Herbs.....Not to big a garden as I've had years ago. We have a Farmers Market nearby where I buy the veggies I lie but don't grow. I also grow all kinds of flowers in beds and hanging baskets.

I have Iris' woodland hyacinths, strawberries, rosemary, basil, (3 kinds) thyme (2 kinds), chives, parsley, 1 red bell peper and 1 sweet banana pepper so far. I also have lots of weeds and unwanted seedling trees. It's hard for me to get down and pull up stuff so the grandkids come and help once in a while.
I'm having to start all over because the past 2 growing seasons I was in CA with my mom. Dh didn't water anything and most of the plants died. This year I'll be here so we will have a garden...... eventually. I like to mix herbs in with the flowers and veggies. Might as well have pretty flowers in with the herbs and tomatoes.
