Community Gardening?

I just found out that the county next to our has several plots of land throughout their area that they've turned into community gardens. You can rent a space in these gardens to grow whatever veggies that you want to grow. They prepare the dirt ahead of time and I think that they offer gardening tools as well.

The first thing I did was to have my son ask his teacher if our county did this too. (His teacher is involved in the parks and recreation in our area). He said that they don't have anything available yet but that they have plans for something like this. I have always wanted to try my hand at gardening but living in an apartment or a rental house, we've never had the land to do it. That, and the fact that I have a black thumb so having the ground prepared for me would really help!

Are these gardens in other states, too?

Community Gardens

There are several counties that I know of in N. Carolina that offer community garden plots. I would suggest you call your local Cooperative Extension office (usually found under county name) in all states and ask them if they know of one.

Several communities in our area have Community Gardens. You rent the garden space each year and then plant whatever you want. It is a great solution for apartment dwellers or people with small yards with no room for a garden.
I think in our area you have to provide your own tools, unless you can make a deal with one of your garden neighbors to share.

Thanks, Deidra! I will do that!

Joy, I agree! I wish I would've known about this opportunity sooner. I had no idea that this was available.

I'll have to check with the extension agent also, but I don't believe there are any community gardens available in our area. Guess they figure everyone's got plenty of their own land to grow on, but that's not true if you rent.
There are co-ops in the area who deliver veggies to people, some include beef, pork and fowl also.
If I owned some property I'd definitely consider opening it up for a community garden....

We have several community gardens throughout the city. I drive past one on the way to work everyday. I love seeing what people plant and watching it grow. I think there is a waiting list to get a plot. I'm not sure how it works as far as getting one, but they are full every year.

WE've got a couple here in central PA also, we are part of the university's one, it is organic for growing but not for seeds or plants. They supply the tools and the water and the fertile mulch. We pay $30 for a 10 x 15 which doesn't sound like much until you see how it produces! Very good soil.
