Environmental/Frugal watering question

I am wondering if I can use "saved" water from dirty dishes and dirty hand washing (so water with hand soap and dish soap) to water my vegetables and vines with? I am also wondering about the water we dump out of our hot tub -- it is fairly chlorinated, but seems a shame to just dump it down the drain. Is it better for the environment to just dump these types of water down the drain and have the city clean it?
Thanks!
Jo-Anne

Used household water is called "grey water". You can read the pros & cons about it at the Greenhouse.gov.au site http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhom...l/pdf/fs23.pdf

I've heard of people directing their washer water to water their yards during droughts.

Thank you so much for posting that website! I wonder why more septic systems aren't designed with this greywater diversion in mind, probably cost?

Really informative info there! But, I am getting that I cannot re-use this grey water as is. I'm not quite ready to install the system they show - a little too complicated I'm afraid! Too bad. It was worth the asking, though. Thanks!

I don't now what they say about it today but my G-Mom always used the water from her washer (ringer) to water plants/reg trees and fruit trees and they all thrived. And at times there was bleach and other times amonia in the water as well as the soap. And I have used dish water on my plants AND SO FAR HAVE NOT KILLED ANY. Don't know if that helps or not.

Reuse, reduce, recycle your way to a better earth

I hate to see water go down the drain that I could use for something else.

Jo-Anne, I pour the dishwater on my lawn every day. I wash the dishes in a dishpan and throw the water on my flowers and grass. Neither has died or shown any side affects.

The greywater issue is a big one here, (for household and businesses) many outback areas have no choice but to use the greywater for their gardens if they want to see greenery.
We are getting discounts on our household rates (to local govt) if we have installed greywater (rerouted pipes straight to the garden) and any water efficiency devices.
I'm with the others and think it should be ok, if you're worried don't put on any water you've put strong additives to.
