Building A Greenhouse?

Has anyone ever built or purchased their own green house? I'm looking into it and think it would help plants climate wise, especially during the winter. I am not sure where to begin, but I have seen easy build green houses at Sears. It is made with gauge aluminum and polyethylene sheeting. Any recommendations? How much did it cost you to set everything up?

Hi,
I just thought that I can share some of my own research on the same process, that I am doing as we speak. I hope that you will be able to use some of the links below, just click on each one. To compare each site, just press CONTROL+N, and your browser will duplicate itself. At that point you can go to another site without losing your original page of veiw.
The Arch Greenhouse even has exact plans with the materials list. Anyone who is handy in your household or community can do it it 2 weekends.
Good Luck!

My DH and I built a 16 by 20 greenhouse on a cement pad left where a house trailer used to set in our field. We bought large windows at auctions and yard sale and built the frame around whatever size we had. It slopes North to south on the roof of corrugated clear plastic. It cost $500.00 or less and works great. We put in a propane space heater and 2 exhaust fans controlled by a thermomstat. I have had it 5 yr now and love it.

Lisa Berry.....Years ago in NJ we did the same thing with windows. Someone was getting rid of them so it cost me nothing. My DH built the bottom out of cement blocks then added railroad ties with dirt on the outside. Used jalousie windows in the door and roof peaks for ventilation. Also had the corrogated plastic sheets on the roof. Added shelves to start all my tomato & squash plants of all types. Used pull up blinds to protect from the sun. It was right near the garden which helped with transplanting. Wonder if it is still being used?

We just recently built a greenhouse out of all windows we picked up in people's throw away piles. Used a storm door we got from someone else. Anyway, I paln on starting my vegetable garden seedlings in it next year and planting fall lettuces and such. I just moved three sweet pepper plants into it to try making them last longer than the freeze will allow in the garden. Still experimetning with it all; any one have any suggestions of things they tried that didn't work out. Guess I'm looking for any tried and true tips; do you have any?

If you hear of someone redoing their house windows a lot of time they are happy to give their old ones away! We got lucky and got several that way. The rest of them we collected out of the junk piles here and there. You might even be able to contact of replacemenmt window place and take some off of their hands! We ept all ours from the hous we gave to DS#2, but we used them all up before the greenhouse got started.

We made one of the chicken coop doors out of 2 old windows, the two windows in it are old windows, DH's computer room in hios workshop has two of them in it and they open for air in the summer into his workshop; not the outside. I made a frame out of one of them with a few of the boys pictures I kept of them as they were growing up. Old windows are always a good thing to pick up when you see them. Thew regualr house windows famed or not and storm windows too! Good Luck on your search!
