Laura, I had forgotten to mention the olive oil. It's expensive, but so worth it. It's very good for the heart too.

My dad has been known to call it "oleomargarine."

I rarely use it, but my DD likes the olive-oil based spreads (like Olivio & Smart Balance) because they are softer to spread on toast. I keep a little margarine around for baking as there are a few things I bake that don't turn out the same with either butter or Crisco.

My mom called it Oleo! I remember it. I also use the Olivio spread. They are great for spreading on toast. Other than that I love to use Olive oil for cooking and butter for most of my baking.

I use olive oil for just about all of my cooking (even if it calls for shortening) but prefer real butter on other things but do buy margarine as my dh and dks like it.

Sammi, I am the same way. For things that require butter or butter type products, I use butter. For everything else, I use olive oil.

I can remember my grandmother would use oleo some of the times and then would call it margarine. She use to have a resturant and back then they would only serve real butter.

It's funny how things have to change and evolve over the years.

I use the margarine in most of my baking and sometimes the butter for cookies to get them to turn out right. But do use the soft spreads for toast and sandwiches.
