Me I'm a Kathleen, my mum wanted it kept Kathleen but my dad kept shortening it and it stuck LOL.
I hate it when you have to make a decision like ... I want to buy bulk or bigger bag but then it's not always cheaper to buy the bigger bags esp when a special comes on. You then have to decide do you pay the extra and be environmental or be frugal and buy the smaller bags? I just thought of this as I've just come back from shopping. I have to say there for me I think the purse wins out LOL

Kathy(Bilby) - I know what you mean about having to choose between your pocketbook and the environment. I will admit that my pocketbook usually wins, too. Even still, you are probably doing much more for the environment than almost anybody you know. The more aware I become, the more appalled I am at how wasteful people can be. In just the last few months, I have gotten so much better about using and re-using things until they are WORN OUT.
By the way, I'm a Kathleen also. My mom is a Catherine.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention, I read somewhere once that there is a connection between saving money, being green and being healthier. They seem to go together. For instance, if you eat less packaged, processed foods, you will spend less money and be healthier. I think I read it in a book about voluntary simplicity. It explained it much better than me, but I think you get the general idea!

I guess that makes sense, I mean you are more mindful of what you're buying and more aware of what goes in that choc cake you made and not the "numers" or extras they put into food you have no idea about.
We are lucky we have a recycling collection bin that gets collected every 2 weeks, plastics paper and the like, so alwyas double check also what can be rcycled.
This is my area and how our recycling works.

My pocketbook usually wins out too- unforunately. I try to follow something I heard a while back-just do what you can & try to do something every day no matter how small. It all adds up. Then I don't feel so guilty.
People are wasteful so I try to not buy as much & use up & wear out what I do have.
By making our own food ,you can control what is in it & keep out what you don't want in it.
Our recycling is once a week, Fridays, same as regular garbage. Separate truck.Usually is full.We have had a lot less regular garbage since we started recycling. I had been taking in papers & cans long before we had curbside pickup.

I have to agree that Kathleen's are cool! I wanted to share a story about how sometimes actions have unintended positive consequences. I bought two pretty purple flowering plants this past spring to put in pots next to my front door. I don't remember what kind of plants they are, but they called for partial sun/shade. Since the front of my house only gets morning sun and there's a huge oak tree on the front lawn, I thought they would be perfect. (Besides, purple is my favorite color!) Well, anyway, they were doing fine until it got really hot a few weeks ago. They were in pretty bad shape, and I figured they were going to die. Well, I didn't want to keep watering them, but I didn't want to let them die either. I usually use the rinse water from when I do dishes to water all of my potted plants. Well, anyway, I forgot to water the ones out front. I took the soapy water that I hadn't drained yet and watered both plants with that. The next day both plants had really perked up. The day after that they both started blooming again! Now, I will make sure to water them with the soapy water. Go figure!

Good job on recycling the water. It must have had some nutrients in it that the plants needed. I also use the water absorbing crystals in my potted plants so I don't have to water so often.
I just saw that The Green on Sundance is going to do a second season.Now they are doing a series about a family that lives in England & is trying to be self sufficent. They are going to do solar & wind power & were using a small stream & waterfall for hydroelectric power. Interesting.
I buy a potting mix that has the wetting crystals already in it. I do have the crystals by them selves and dig a little hole beside trees/shrubs and put in a cup full(?), mixed with the soil, that way it stores the water for when the roots need it.
Good going on the soapy water, I some times worry about that and maybe me killing them with the soapy stuff.
We have a bore on our land, not many people around here do but there is a huge table of water under us (it came with the house) so although we are on tough water restrictions WE can water any old time. Bummer is that it's not drinking water but good for animals and crops.
I would think being totally self sufficient would be a tough call it will be interesting to see how they go.
Back in the '70's there was a sitcom on British television called "Good Neighbors" that was about a couple who decided to become self-sufficient. Even though it was a comedy, it was very interesting and informative. I think it would be too difficult for me. This new show sounds very interesting. I will definitely keep an eye out for it. Even though it would be too difficult for me, I may be learn some new things I can do.
Glad you have another water supply for your plants. How bad is the drought where you are? Here in the US it is hit & miss. Places like Texas are getting slammed by water but in Florida, Georgia, & out West they are dry. We had gone on vacation last June(2006) to The Grand Canyon & several National Parks in Utah. Very dry & hot-90's & 100's. Everywhere there were signs saying fire incidents-HIGH & all the trees were looking dry & some dying. This year on the news they have wildfires all over the west & California. Hot again too.
Here in Indiana it hasn't been too bad mostly 80's & rain once a week or so. We have been lucky.
