Gloria, here in Nebraska we were in a pretty bad drought for about 6 years. We got quite a bit of snow this past winter and had a nice wet spring. They declared that the drought was over. Of course, since then, the rain has pretty scarce. It has only rained once in the whole month of July - about .25 inch. We may get some rain tomorrow. I sure hope so. I would love to have a rainy day.

On our restrictions we are allowed 120 litres of water per person per day per household or it costs a LOT of extra $ and a fine. Know how many litres of water a washing machine takes, yikes!
It seems that loke a lot of places in the world there is either floods or drought, we are on the coastline, 5mins from the water, we get rain but not enough to register in our dams.
They the politicians are coming up with all things udner the sun to hopefully get or save more water.
So while we use our bare water from the underground table of water they are now banning the sinking of any more bores, but we can have unlimited water for us (in some ways more luck than good good management it came with the house LOL)
My mum lives out south west of us (70mins) and she has tank water and bore water (livestock and vegetation) only, at least we have town water.
The lateset here is to recucle water sewrage (sounds icky but many coutnries in the world do it and they are seriously talking about it here.)
We'll wait and see.
She gets much much less rain than us

Thumbs up

We do take rain for granted. We just had a little yesterday & more last night. About an inch.
Our town water is from wells even though we are only 20-25 miles fron Lake Michigan. They had looked into getting us Lake Michigan water but it would not go back to the lake & needed permission from all the states involved to make an exception. Ohio would not give it. Our wells are pretty good except there is too much fluoride in it.

My daughter & I have discussed that there will be someone who will figure out how to move the water from the flooded areas & give it to the ones in a drought. They will probably get a Nobel prize for it.

Probably next year I will get 1 or 2 rainbarrels to catch water under my downspouts. It is the latest way to recycle water for the gardens.

Here's hoping you both get some rain-hopefully a rainy day!!

I just heard that season two of "Living With Ed" will premiere on August 27th on HGTV. This is the show about Ed Begley, Jr., who is very environmentally conscious.

We've actually had a good amount of rain this past week - about three inches. I want to look into those rain collection barrels as well. Does anybody know a good source for information? My biggest concern is mosquitoes.

Thanks for the information on the returning date of "Living With Ed". I had enjoyed the three episodes that I had seen. He is an inspiration to us all. He had gotten rain barrels on one of them. They were an ugly orange.

We have gotten quite a bit of rain here, too. Not complaining.

Those rain barrels are expensive-about $100-150 each. If you are handy there are instructions to download on the internet to make your own for about $30 each. They just don't tell you where to get the barrel for it. I may have to email them to find out(city of Bremerton,Wa).

Also you cannot leave them out filled during the winter as they could split with the water freezing.

Hi I forgot to add that there are screens to stop mosquitoes & there are things called dunks that you can put in there that stopped the eggs from hatching.

Thanks for the info on rain barrels. It just so happens that DH is very handy. I will definitely look for those instructions. DH is interested in a system that he can hook a soaker hose up to so it'll be easier to water everything with the turn of a faucet. It's a good thing he's an engineer. At work they call him McGiver!

If you do find a good & cheap source for 50 or 60 gal barrels to use for the rain barrels let me know. The instructions I downloaded just had a phone # not an email address.
