I use ceiling fans in my rooms to circulate the air. I keep my windows open at night. That way it is nice and cool in the morning and takes longer to heat up.

In places where the sun comes in really strong. I close the blinds or curtains to keep the sun out of the room.

In addition to Charlotte's suggestions, why not add awnings to your south- or west-facing windows? Those are the ones you really want to block in the heat of the day.

Close off ALL unused rooms, as well.

Circulating floor fans also help.

make sure the windows where the most sunlight comes in has heavy blinds, or get a sunshade for the window.. it comes in a roll, and you can cut off as much as you need, and apply it to the window..

don't use the oven, find foods that you can prepare without the oven as that will heat up a room fast.

if you not using a room, shut the doors or hang a drap over that area, that way the fans can help cool only the area you need.

get some of the smaller personal fans to put on you..

if you have ceiling fans use them.

start your mornings off early where most of the work is done, where in the afternoon you can louge around with the fans on you.

even at night time, don't heat up the house for when you do that can carry over.

I've lived in a mobile home long time ago and they can be very hot.. it metal heating up.. and it so hard to cool one down.

In the afternoon if you can get away to go do things it a good thing to do so, this way you not in the house where the heat is.

Before we had air conditioning I'd open up the windows in the morning before work and set a fan or two in them drawing in the morning air to cool the house down. Then before leaving for the day I'd close up the house again just running the fans when we got home to move the air around.

In addition to all the suggestions given here. If you have a forced air furnace, and can switch just the fan on use that.

According to what I have read, basically what big department stores such as WalMart do. Is they only turn on the AC to cool off to a certain temp. Than switch to just the fans to circulate the cool air.

I would imagine this would work with the letting the windows open at night. Closing the windows early while it is still cool, and just using the fan blower.

Gee, I bet even just using the fan would help with the windows open.

We only have a large window AC in our kitchen. When it is extremely hot, I turn the fan to the furnace on to circulate the air. Sometimes if I don't have it on the kids beg me to turn it on.

I don't think there is anything left to add.. you ladies have suggested everything I have used during the time I lived in both Illinois and California, and we face here in Washington - in fact I always wondered why a house with no AC would have a cool setting on the heater thermometer. THANKS
When I was a child up here, I remember my mom closing the curtains/drapes over the sun light sides of the house, and having the doors and windows open - then in the late 70's my dad built a basement and we spent a lot of warm days down there when we could not get outside to play.
If you have the funds for it, another suggestion would be to have tall plants / trees near the windows to help reduce the amount of sunlight that comes in through those windows - planted / hardy hanging baskets so as not to obstruct view.

You could try putting a box fan in a window backwards to suck the hot air out while having other fans blowing around the house.
