question about abbreviations

I've noticed on a lot of the boards, husband, daughter, and son are abbreviated dh, dd, ds. I am so curious what the "d" stands for! I just can't figure it out! (I know when you tell me it will be so simple!)

I'm new to all of this as well, but I think it stands for "dear"
If not, I guess I need to be enlightened as well

I guess it depends in what context I know in some cases I like to think of it as "dang" instead of "dear" ! LOL I guess it's just personal preference!;-)

I didn't know what it meant either so I always just made it up in my head that it meant darling. Though I do like Kimmy's suggestion that dang is appropriate sometimes!! LOL!!!!

Let's see how many of these I can list ...

These are the ones I use the most, or have seen the most - there are more. Most of them are just basic phrases that have been shortened to letters.

dd = dear daughter
ds = dear son
dh = dear husband
mil = mother-in-law
fil = father-in-law
bil = brother-in-law
sil = sister-in-law
FYI = for your information
IMHO = In my humble opinion
ISO = in search of
BTW = by the way
FWIW = for what it's worth
KWIM = know what I mean?
LOL = laughing out loud
ROTFLOL = rolling on the floor, laughing out loud
LMBO = laughing my butt off (some people will use "A" instead of "B")

Hope that helps!
(that would be "HTH"!)

Thank you!

Although I know many of these, there are a few I have not seen or heard of.

Thanks again.

chuckle Alphabet Soup!

I run an e-mail list for families who use the same curriculum I do, and there are over 400 members (only about 100 are really active, with another hundred posting once a month or less). We tend to abbreviate some of the materials we discuss, like DbD (Day by Day, the lesson planner), P2P (Penmanship to Praise), etc.

Combine that with the things I posted above and you've got a message that looks like it's typed in code!

Can you imagine if we actually did that...

Let a new member try to read it and wonder what they got themself into... LOL

But we would never do that!
