Blast Off Rockets

Blast Off Rockets

What better way to spend quality time with your family than to enjoy a craft project together? The following are step-by-step instructions to make Foamie Blast-Off Rockets that are fun to create and even more fun to blast-off!

Supplies Needed

3-4 sheets of 12" x 18" Foamies (Foamies are similar to big smooth sponges and are available at craft stores); sharp scissors or exacto knife; Magic Markers; 35mm film canister with lid (3 or 4 depending upon number of rockets made): water: and 2-3 Alka-Seltzers (rocket fuel).

After you design your rockets you will want to launch them outside.

Cut Foamie sheets to make 6" x 12" rectangles. Cut corner off of one 6" x 12" side Foamie to make a point. This is your foamie rocket. Decorate your rocket with Magic Markers. Draw stars, stripes -- anything you like -- you can even name your rocket. At the bottom edge of your rocket (opposite of the point), in the center, make a 1 inch deep slit with an exacto-knife or scissors.

Insert one 35mm open film canister into the slit. Make sure the open end of the canister is almost even with the bottom of the rocket. You may have to cut the slit deeper so the canister fits all the way into the rocket. The canister holds the rocket fuel. Your rocket should be able to stand on a flat surface with the point facing up. The bottom edge should have the canister inserted.

Get a pitcher of water, Alka-Seltzers and rockets and go outside. Find a flat surface -- such as a driveway, sidewalk or deck. Break the Alka-Seltzer tablets into quarters. Turn the rocket over and fill the film canister ½ full of water (the canister should still be in the rocket). Drop 1/4 Alka-Seltzer tablet into the canister with the water and quickly snap the canister lid on. Set the rocket down on a flat surface (canister edge down, rocket point facing skyward), and stand back. The rocket should blast off after the canister lids pops off!

You can shoot off your foamie rockets again and again --just keep filling the canister with water and Alka-Seltzers. Have fun!
