Lavender questions

Ok, you garden folk...I have a question

I have some lavender that is getting large. I want to divide it, and give a cutting or two to a friend. Any ideas on how nad when to do this?? Would I need to root the cutting in water for awhile?? Any ideas???

lavender

I was hoping to read some replies from qualified gardeners who really know what they are doing... I am a "try and see what happens, don't know what that's called", gardener. Anyway, I love lavender. My MIL gave me a piece of hers.. just took a shovel and cut the edge off. It took and grew nicely for two years..then got too much water from rainy season (probably not enough drainage where I put it). In the meantime I bought another and put it in full sun with good drainage and it has really spread. This year I separated a portion the was near the edge and dug it up and replanted...also gave some to neighbor. I was a little more careful than just jabbing the shovel in. That was two weeks ago and it seems to be alive and doing okay. Hope that helps a little.

Lavender

hsma, I also am hoping for some other replies. In the meantime, the reason I just took from the edge, was that I didn't want to kill my main plant that was doing well. But if you get down and look how you are taking the branches, I would try and get one that you could pull off and give it a try in the water to see if it would root that way. I also noticed some from last year that were kind of dead looking so I clipped those off. Since I wrote you, the tips are all in the process of blooming. The old and THE NEW ONE! hurray! I would make sure to find a sunny spot for the new and good drainage as the first one I had never did as well as this one.slb
