Family Treasures

I think alot of us have something in our homes that has been passed down through the generations that we simply will not part with. Or, maybe we have created something that we hope will remain in our families for a very long time. Either way, I thought we could share some of those treasures here.

In this picture of my dgd Tatum, she is sitting in a child sized rocking chair that my grandfather made for me when I was 3 years old. My grandmother painted it. As you can see, we never repainted it. I rocked my dolls in it, my daughter rocked her dolls in it and now my dgd rocks her dolls in it. Three generations so far & counting!

What a beautiful treasure.

Among the many things we have kept is my mil's doll Rosemary. She got Rosemary when she was 6 years old, my mil passed away 2 years ago at the age of 77 so Rosemary is 71 years old. I promised my mil I'd always keep her and will.

I have my grandmother's monogrammed silverware that was left to me when she died, a beautiful set of breakfast dishes left to me by my great-grandmother, a constantine (instrument that is sort of like an accordian) that is well over 150 years old that was left to me by my great-grandmother. I also have a whole suitcase full of my great grandmother's journals that she kept for years and years. They are amazing to read. We also have the rocking chair my dh used when he was 2 and probably many more treasures that I can't think of now.

That is awesome.. I would especially like to read the journals of the times and events of that time period. That's one thing I wish my mil had left us, I would have treasured it more than any of the material things.

Anna, one cool thing about her journals is she wrote down every day what she bought at the grocery store and what it cost and then how much money she had left in her purse. You would not believe the prices of things back in the 40's and 50's. Truly amazing.

Oh Sammi

I am so jealous!!!

Ya know, you could start one of those blogs that pays and call it "Granma's Journal 1933" and put in one of her entries each day. I bet you would get a lot of hits as folks followed her daily life.

My beloved G-Mom had this ceramic cat about 9" high black and white and my middle dau Gina fell in love with it when he was just tiny little girl so when we lost Mama ('69) it came to me and I kept it thro' moves etc and when Gina turned 18 I gave it to her as part of her b'day gift. She has treasured it over the years and she is now 46 and still loves it as much as she ever did. There are other things but will talk about them another time

I was blessed to have an old rocker that Ihad my picture took in when I was a year old that belong to my great-grandmother on my dad's side.I also was given an old Ducth looking woman cookie jar that belong to dad's mom. My Aunt gave me my grand mothers mothers day ring that her & her dh had bought for her mom as she has no kids of her own. I also have a cat cookie jar that belong to my mom's mother but it's not as old as the other cookie jar. We also have an old leather jacket that my dad had bought when he was oversea's in the Army back in the late forties or early fifties.
